Little seedling with suckers already

Denver, CO(Zone 5b)

Am I right in thinking this will give me a nice sized sucker for later on, like a second trunk if I let it go long enough? I havent seen one do this, it grew different from the start. Gosh, if it will give me a second trunk, that would be wonderful! All the more cuttings to send out and have evaluated.

Shelly, I had many, many seedlings with multiple trunks this year. I had a lot last year too. It sure comes in handy when you get one that needs to be trialed and you don't have to cut up the whole plant to do that. What you have there is what I call a side shoot. Some of them can get to be quite large. I cut some off of one of my plants today that were three and four ft. long.

LOL side shoot... lolol I was typing in off shoot, and I kept thinking "Now that just doesnt look right" Thank you Shirley! Gosh these seedlings must know they will need to be evaluated, so they are giving extra of themselves! Just like the hybridizer, giving, and more giving, awesome!
My gosh! 3-4 feet! Thats great!

That was a second year plant Shelly. My seedlings don't seem to produce many side shoots, only those from the roots or base of the plant.

Brugie....the ones from the base can be used as an extra tree if cut off, right?

Matthews, MO(Zone 6b)

Shelly, I had some that did that too, and I am like you, more cutting material for trials. Shirley alot of mine are mulitple trunks too, and Y'd at four ft. Awesome trait!

Sure Margie. Those are the ones that make such nice alley trees.

I always have each year several seedlings with multiple stems. Usually, I cut them off.

Monika, do you think they bloom more, less, or the same with multiple stems? I love a bush that is full of blooms, but if multiple stems cuts back on the overall blooming, I'll start whacking next year.

Here is one of my seedlings ... look at all the side shoots!!

I am wondering the same thing in regards to side shoots slowing down the first blooming. It is rational to think that it does because it takes energy to grow those side shoots. Hopefully, Monika will come back and answer this for us.

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

They bloom the same Shirley but side shoots slows down the growth. This doesnt bother too much in a mild climate but it does it in my short growing season.

It sure is a great trait! I will be anxious to hear what Monika says about cutting them off. My gosh Deb! LOTSA cutting material there for sure! If I didnt know better, I may have thought it was a cutting, it looks so bushy. Glad all you experts are around to show and tell such things. Yall have my highest respect.

Grass Lake, MI(Zone 5a)

Thanks Shelly .... it is a special seedling and not a cutting. I have not had the heart to cut them off.

Denver, CO(Zone 5b)

LOL I dont blame you, I dont know if I could cut mine either.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I wouldn't cut it off either if it is a special seedling. I hope it is a special one for you, Deb.

I thought these suckers and shoots were normal. All of mine have them, especially the 3 I call the Karyn Riggs (that are really Suave X). And they Y, and those Y, and they are getting fairly different looking compared to the Isabella Xs'.
