I just returned from a week in Puerto Rico. While working my way down a mountainside I spotted a brugmansia bush off to the side. One of the men offered to cut a path to the bush so I could get closer. His 10' walking staff disappeared in the undergrowth, the slope was so steep. He did, however, obtain one blossom for me. I took some pictures as well as pollen. I have never seen a blossom so large, almost 16" across. Is this a record? How large do the blossoms get? Unfortunately the Bronx is not in the tropics so I doubt I'll ever get a plant to grow blossoms this large.
Edit to update:
Today I received a box which I mailed to myself with some cuttings from this brug. I am interested in trading for some cuttings of varieties I don't have. Please e-mail me with your offer to trade indicating the variety(s) you have to trade. I have six cuttings available to trade. I will edit again when I have committed all the cuttings. Doubles and/or deep red/pink or blue :-) preferred.

ALL COMMITTED - sorry I don't have more at this time. If I go back to PR I will try to get more and will post at that time. Thanks for the interest - Padre

Largest Brug blossom?
Oh WOW!! How neat Padre! Sounds like an amazing time! That is a HUGE bloom! Its a lovely color! Glad you got some pollen! Who are you going to put it on? How exciting!
I can only imagine how exciting your find must have been, wowzers, it's a beauty and a lovely color, how did it smell?????
Oh my gosh, that bloom is huge. It sure is too bad that travelers can't bring back plants. That would have been a great one to have. You are so lucky to have spotted it. Thanks for sharing your pictures with us. Now we will all dream of 16 inch wide brugmansia blooms tonight. A tree full of those would be quite a picture.
Wow, what a huge bloom, Padre. You sure are doing a lot of traveling. Are you sticking Brug cuttings in your pockets? LOL
I'm working to assist in developing the property as a site for a meditation center so I may yet get to cultivate that plant or its ofspring. There are so many beautiful flowering plants growing wild on the property it is a paradise but very challenging to groom for development due to the extreemly steep slope. We will accept volunteers, however a lineage with mountain goat ancestors would be helpful :-)
It would be great to see all the plants growing there. I wish you much luck, Padre. Wish I could volunteer.
What a beauty!
Plants CAN be sent to the USA from Puerto Rico..its a commonwealth of the USA. Check with local USDA office..and then GET US A PLANT!! LOL :-)
Very nice Genes..not yours..the plants!!LOL
Oh how fabulous Padre to be able to find a brug growing in the wild. What an experience. Kyles is right. We can get plants from Puerto Rico. I have gotten several shipments from there on e-Bay. Please bring back a piece to root and share later on.
Wow, that's amazing! I have never seen a brug bloom that big! I like the color and flower form too! I sure hope you are able to bring back cuttings of this brug from your future travels. Were you able to save any of the pollen? If so I hope you can get some pods from your brugs or send the pollen to someone who's an expert with hybridizing brugs.
How Cool!!!!!
Its beautiful!!!!
Amazing find, Padre. I hope you will have the opportunity to work with this beauty on your return to PR. Thanks for sharing your great pic :)
HiPadre what a great chance to work in Puerto Rico and to find such a treasure. It looks like you get to traVEL A LOT WHICH IS GREAT. Many blessings to you. bob
KLUNK! That was my jaw hitting the table in front of me when I saw your post, Padre. Holy Moley - that is gorgeous! Sure hope you can get a cutting of that and tell us how you make out growing it up here in the Northeast. Good luck and be careful on those slopes!

Goodness, did I read that correctly, cuttings, of that beauty, availabl ??!!! I have not been here long enough to warrant even a casual glance; however, it is magnificent and, of course, I would love one. Do you think it would thrive in Arky????
Hey Padre.....that's a great offer! I hope you get the blue brug!!! LOL Keep us all updated....I'm hoping it blooms just as big here in the US.
Dear SherryLike, I have a few for trade but not enough to provide for all who would like to have one. On future trips I will make an honest effort to gather more cuttings and/or pollen so more growers would be able to have a plant themselves. Padre
