anyone know about transplanting established tarragon?

I have 2 tarragon plants that I want to move in order to make room for something that will use their space better. I've got a great place to move them to, but I'm not sure if they transplant well. They've been in the ground for over a year. Will a move kill them? I'm going to move them anyway (and replace them if they die), but I'd kind of like to know before hand what I might be getting myself into LOL

Thanks in advance!

You should have no trouble with transplanting them. Just keep them watered well for about the first couple of weeks.

Debby thanks for the feedback! :-)

Your welcome. Forgot to say that you should also cut the plants back, to reduce the transplant shock.

Hi Debby,

that brings up another question I have. In my herb garden book it says that tarragon should be cut back nearly to the ground in the autumn after flowering. Well last year my two new plants grew to over a meter tall and about 60 centimeters wide. After flowering I cut them back as the bok said. But this both plants were very very slow to start growing again and now are still only about 40 centimeters tall. it's like they just REALLY didn't like having been cut back in th fall. Do you agree that tarragon should be cut back in the fall to such an extreme? And if not, how far would you cut them back? Thanks for any feedback you can lend!

Julie: Before transplanting I would cut it back to within 6-12 inches. I never cut my tarragon back in the fall. That is just because I have overlooked it and it comes back great each year.
