Just moved to Tennessee & Dave's Garden

Afton, TN(Zone 6b)

Hi everyone...

After many years of hard work (in the office) I turned my company over to my son and moved back to "home," or close that is (I'm from Western NC). I grew up in the country with gardens (flower & vegetable) and all my life I have longed to get back to nature and working in the dirt, so I packed up and came east (I was living in Southern CA) looking for a small farm I could buy. I got lucky near Greeneville, TN and absolutely love it here...but now I need help!

This whole gardening thing (online at least) is new to me, and since I don't know anyone locally yet I really am at a loss as to where to get started. It seems I found the co-op threads too late (they are all closed) and I wanted (and needed badly) to plant tons of Hydrangeas and Rhododendruns, etc. before winter. Any ideas where I can purchase loads of plants at co-op type prices. I'm willing to drive a distance to get them, but these $15.00 - $25.00 a piece prices for plants will kill be before I get started.

Anyway, I am loving the Forums and the pictures and it seems that Dave's Garden world is just what I remember gardeners to be like !

Here a picture of the house (going to need some ideas with landscaping around the front of the house soon).

Happy gardening,
Jim

Welcome to DG, Jim! I can see why you would want to get out of the office and move to your beautiful new farm. I just love your house. I know you'll find lots of ideas to help you along here.

Depending on just how many hydrangeas you want to buy, you could contact the company the co-op bought from and see if you qualify. I know that with several members with the trees and shrub co-op, they decided to go right to the source because they needed so many. What's the worst thing they could say?

If you had a greenhouse I could send you cuttings of several different kinds of hydrangeas for postage, but I don't think they would root at this time of year otherwise. Check back with me in late spring if you still need some and I'll be happy to send them to you then.

Afton, TN(Zone 6b)

Thank you so much for the offer to send some cuttings. I do wish I had a greenhouse already but not this year. I will most certainly construct one by next fall however.

I am trying to find the supplier (nursery) where he (Trees & Shrubs guy) got his Hydrangeas, but no reply as yet.

Also, I'll take you up on your offer for this coming spring!

Thanks again!

Jim, Welcome from Western NC! I don't quite remember where Afton is but the name is familiar. I LOVE the house!!

Here are the links to the Nursery where Terry (female and one of the Admins here) is getting the trees and shrubs for that Co-Op. I believe you can probably order direct given the quantities I saw you post.

Huntington Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

Hi Jim and a great big welcome to DG.

I am so envious of you having all that space to plant to your hearts content. Since you lived here in So. CA, you know how small our gardens are the the suburbs. I think our whole lot, including the house, is only 1/4 acre. lol I try to pretend that it's larger, by planting lots of different things and also planting up on the block walls.

We have some very generous people here and if you want some plants for your new gardens, you might want to ask for things for SASE, since you don't have anything to trade with yet. I have a small plantlet of a Purple Buddelia that I could send you if your interested, for SASE.

Stick around and you will meet some of the most wonderful people on this site.

BTW, where in SoCal did you live? As you can see, I live in Huntington Beach.

Welcome to Daves, Jim. I'd love to have a porch like that to sit on. Your place will be awesome when you are finished. Remember to take pictures at every stage of the game. We all love pictures. Glad you are here.

Afton, TN(Zone 6b)

Thanks Brugie, and rest assured that I'll take lots of pictures. In fact the first I plan to post is one where I'll be asking for suggestions on the front of my house, which presently has almost no landscaping...not even a walkway. Can't wait to hear the suggestions for plants in the garden I plan between the flagstone walk and the house.
