Good morning, folks! I live in South Florida where it is impossible to get citrus trees. Either they were banned in canker areas (I'm fine) or the groves that were blown away with the hurricane need them. My hubby and I just bought 38 acres of beautiful Everglades and plan to eventually retire there. My family history is from Key West- we use alot of citrus for cooking and marinades. I have key lime but would absolutely love Meyers Lemon. Can anyone help me? I can trade mango, key lime, sea almond, starfruit , guava or pay.
Gratefully,
Carol

Hi Carol:

Thank you delecie! I wrote and enquired about them, thanks to you!
You're welcome Carol. I hope they'll grow well for you. :-)
delecie, I have a question maybe you can help me with..we primarily want to grow fruits. Why are most exotic fruits grown in Homestead? Is it your water table? We have the same sun and rain that you have so I assume it's something with the ground.

Carol:
I'm not really sure. Our soil is horribly rocky and normally there is only 2-3 inches of soil covering the coral rock. However, Homestead is primarily an agricultural area and it may be that after years of growing crops and amending the soil the growers have good soil to work with. Also we have great temperatures most of the year. I know that you're aware that we sometimes get cold temperatures for Florida but we hardly ever freeze.
A good person to ask might be Chris Rollins who is the manager of Fruit and Spice Park in Homestead: http://www.miamidade.gov/parks/Parks/fruit_spice.asp
You might also ask the staff at Pine Island Nursery:

Thank you!
You're welcome Carol and good luck! :)
