Taking an early peek

The green heart shaped leaves on this look like some of the very similar looking ornamental sweet potatoes cultivars.

Actually most cultivars have heart shaped leaves. The other options are the cut leaf , sometimes called ivy leaf. these are not as common.

Thanks(!) Farmerdill for the additional info regarding the leaf forms...My main interest in posting here was to suggest that the Sweet potatoes usually grown for the root, can also have an ornamental aspect value to them, that may also be appreciated...

I used to grow the whole potato in a glass jar in the window for the vine. Just put about four toothpicks around the outside, then place the bottom portion of the tuber in the water, and in a week or two you'll have vines beginning to grow. If done right, the tuber will last a long time.

I am interested in purchasing some Oklahoma Red sweet potatoes or next season purchasing some plants. Can someone please advise where this is possible.
I have heard of a sweet potato called Copper Jewel that has strange looking leaves and this may be it.

Thank you

Oklahoma red is popular in this area, available from most seed and feeds in the spring. I like them better than Beauregard, but Beauregard has prettier vines and does bloom usually. Both Oklahoma Red and Copper Jewel ( an exceptionally good sweet potato) can be mail ordered from Sandhill Preservation. http://www.sandhillpreservation.com/catalog/sweet_potatoes.html They also have an extensive collection of Ivy leaved types.
