First, I had to bug him to pick up a my cat's catch of the day, a mouse, and then to cut the fat one down. It needed to be sawed it was so thick. Then he had to pose with them to show how tall! LOL
Time to cut suckers off to root before winter for next year's alley trees!
2 are suckers from Big Yella and one is from a no name pink seedling that though is not good enough for release bloomed profusely and will make a nice alley tree.
My Husband is 6ft 2 inches tall. Look at the tall skinny one in my DH's right hand, it has Yed at the very top! LOL I need a tall one to plant in my front garden so it does not shade any underplantings. Though I think that one will be way too tall as it will grow another 6 feet above the Y.
I will stick them in 15 gallon pots now and put them under a tree to root over fall.
edited thanks to TomH3787 for reminding me it is Big Yella not Old Yella! LOL

My husband is saying. "Hurry up, my game is on!"
What a guy you have there Kell ... still helping during game time!!
Are you sure you don't live in Texas. Gosh, I think you grow them taller in your state. LOL!
My gosh those are tall!!! Suckers! My word lol Big Yella DOES make good alley trees!
Kell, you mean. another 6 feet, past the Y, huh??? If so, I'm really glad because it looks like I'm going to harvest an alley tree, from my precious Rosemond, that is just 6 feet, and another from Pink Favorite that might be 6 feet and is not straight, boo hoo, but I don't have another choice because of where she Yed. I'm taking this alley thing seriously, so I'm letting my 'pretties' grow until the last minute before I cut them, to root.
Do all your alley cuttings have Ys??? I'm not sure if I can get a Y cutting from Pink Favorite, and, if not, my heart will be broken, but I'll live over it. Assuming I get alley tree rootings, these will be my first from named brugs - and, if it happens, be assured that I will be shouting from the rooftops...as if, yada, yada, you didn't know -lol...
LOL Kell did he get to see the game?? Sure wish I could do that here but no where to overwinter one that big.
How cold does it get where you are Donna? Here if I put them under a tree they do great all winter unless we have a bad winter. Thn I will runout a tmidnight and lay it down along the ground and cover it with a sheet. I find a tall tree where I can rest the tall trunk to keep it straight. There are no posts tall enough to tie it to keep it straight.
I bet he saw enough of the game. We have had the best weekend. A long lazy one. We took Friday off and went 1 1/2 hours to Point Reyes to Hog Island and bought over 100 oysters fresh from the bay. The best oysters. We start there eating them there on the half shell sittnig by the water. Then all weekend he has served oysters all kinds of ways. We start raw and end Sunday with just cooked ones. So much fun. We do different wines with them all weekend also. I love our oyster weekends.
Sherry, I always leave the suckers on til they Y to get them nice and tall fast. But I bet it would not hurt to cut them off before they Y. They will root also just as easily. See the brug cutting in my husbands left hand? See how tall it is above the Y? The Y must be at over 5 feet and then it is as tall again above the Y. I cut those long limbs back to about 4 nodes each branch.
Wow, Kell. I wish my DH would help with the Brugs (and other plants). He has nothing to do with any plants. LOL He won't even give them a drink of water if he walks by them and they're dying from lack of water. Of course, he's not interested in sports either. LOL
I say turn him in Ada for a better model! LOL. Though if he does not watch sports, that could be every good!
Here is a second year seedling that gave me one bloom last year and this year it is truly gargantuan though totally bloom free. It towers over these suckers I cut off. I can't figure out what I did wrong! It is staying out again this winter so its fate is in God's hands. Being bloom free is not really a good trait. LOL
I have an alley tree (over 10 ft. and growing) that I have no room to overwinter and am wondering if it will have chances surviving a Texas winter if I lay it down along the west side of the house behind some bushes..This side of the house also has a 5 foot overhang to help shade in the summer..Does anyone have any guesses if it will make it this way? Should I also wrap it with something?
This particular one also has a very nice straight shoot that I have had my eye on for a while..thinking it will be perfect for another nice tall tree.
Kell.. those are some monster brugs!!! Anything I had over 3' tall where nicely beheaded.. and who knows where the heads went... probably ended up in GA somewhere.
The tall one with no flowers... which one is that?? I had one that grew huge and never bloomed for three years.. and then finally... BAM!! and since then it had been blooming reliably.
I think you've got a keeper... (hubby).... helps you with brugs... and feeds you oysters chased with wine... geez girl... what a life!!
Wow Kell....those are just huge! And what a hubby you have there! I just love your story of your oyster weekend! Sounds like fun! If I were you, I'd sure hang on to that man!!!
good thing you have a tall husband Kell, those are some cuttings, and don't throw any away, remember me *LOL*
what is the RED BLOOM behind him
Hey, why is it that we see pictures of the men in your life, your brugs and your animals; but never a picture of you?
Sounds like you had a wonderful weekend Kell. You do have a jewel of a man there to help you out like that. Mine will water for me and he does enjoy the blooms, but he doesn't like it when I have fence to fence brugs and they aren't blooming. He say's their ugly plants when not in bloom. Unfortunately for some reason I have had a hard time getting mine to bloom this year. Have have quit a few that keep dropping their buds and I can't figure out why.
Patricia
Kell we get just enough to kill them back. It is so agrravating. Usually to mid 30's which they seem to love and back up to the 50's for daytime but we always get an few days to a week of upper to mid 20's that does them in and then temps go right back up. Grrrrrr!!!!
Wow you have your hubbie trained just right lol.
Hey BoFo, maybe I will post a pic of my bestest friend, Do Ro instead! Bite me! LOL
Donna, do you cover them with sheets? I did last year and it worked well.
Patricia, how disappointing. I am now thinking I did not get that many blooms either this year it is finally occurring to me! Do you get any DARK pinks where you are?
Ms Munché, the tall one is a yellow aurea. It was a butterfly x something. It is tagged. I should go look. The one you see there actually grew so big just in one year, this year. I had cut off the seedling last fall to keep in the hoophouse for it was a very pretty yellow. Then this grew from the stump. It really is huge with huge leaves and a very thick trunk. The cutting I took never bloomed this year either. I sent it to Susie also last year and she said hers is just starting to bloom. So we shall see.
My advice to any young girl is find a guy who loves to cook. Though I didn't know that when I married him. When my son was 6, my husband decided I was a failure as a grocery shopper. I buy everything in sight. So he took it over and I said go for it big guy! And from there he started to cook. I was so pleased!! Little did I know he would become a gourmand and in turn a gourmet chef.
Kell, that huge plant has at least one Y!
Yes, at the very tippy top! It had leaves all the way up, just a baby. So gawky it is cute. It is so tall though, a winter wind will snap it I am sure! I wish I could find a post tall enough to stake it.
It should bloom because you have a much longer growing season.
Kell. LOL I can't trade him in. I've sort got used to him being around. Of course, if I found two thirty year olds to trade him for, I may think about it. LOL
kell
Why you DH hide his face behind thin stem? Is he shy of cam?
Kell, come out, come out wherever you are. Everyone here has shown their picture but you. If I can show my ugly driver's license picture, you can be brave too. LOL

Tell him makes a good brug model :o) I can't get over how tall that sucker is. Did you keep it staked? It's as straight as an arrow...
This sure is a hard group to get a response from...sigh
earthling, I fully intended to reply to this earlier, and I'm soooo sorry I didn't, please forgive!! You live in my zone, and, if I was you, I'd find some way to keep that tree inside for the winter. If it wasn't 'special', I'd leave it in the ground, well mulched. Maybe you could find a pal to keep it inside for you, or slip (ha!) it into a closet or utility room. By hook or crook, I intend to take my trees inside to winter...let me know what you decide...
Kris, I wish I could help, Im in a few zones lower than you.. lol I was told ever so nicely. No need to get upset or frusterated over questions not being answered.
Maybe the best thing would be to start a new thread? That way it doesnt get over looked. I know I completely overlooked your question, and it truely wasnt on purpose.
Dont get frusterated with the "group" lol its not worth it.. life is too short, just use your common sense as far as wintering them over. Take a couple cuttings, (just in case) and "just do it". Thats the only advice I know to give, all you can do is make back-ups, and try it.
Life can be so tough Earthling! Maybe no one knows that has seen your post. If I were you I would start a new thread and ask so it is not buried in this one. You have a better chance of someone from your zone with experience seeing it!
I have posted a pic of me Sylvia. You guys just didn't notice.
No Sue, all of Big Yella's suckers are straight as an arrow though they come off the bottom at an angle.
In the first picture, the sucker in his left hand is huge also. The one in the second pic is the no named pink one.
I would answer your question, Kris, but living in zone 5 doesn't give me any experience with it. Wish I had the weather to try leaving some outside to see what would happen. I think sometimes we have to just jump in with both feet and experiment, but only after making sure we have rooted cuttings to fall back on. Hope you get the answer you need real soon.
Kell,
all I can say is I want your husband....giggle
But then you would have to eat sushi and raw oysters CC! LOL
Now it is okay, looking like Brug. model. But what will you do with these cut plants?will you plant its cuting in this fall.
LOL
Kell,I changed my mind....
oh my goodness I went to the top to see if you were talking about brugs ..I have 4 ..my first ever....so I am more excited about these than dahlias.....it is a whole new passion I never expected to acquire.....what do you mean by alley trees? do you cut them at the base and save them , store them,or wrap them what for the winter? I am in zone 6 bootheel of mo. I thought it was 7 but Jerry Baker's chart says 6....some people leave dahllias in the ground ...mine up around the house always come back so I am wondering about my Brugs. some body tell me about how to save mine please and thank you for the awesome pixs!!!!
del, I'm in zone 8a and there is a world's difference in 8a and 6; however, regardless of the zone I lived in, with of course, some exceptions, I would leave a brug out, heavily mulched to see if it would make it. And, if you do, don't be too hasty next spring because it seems like it takes them forever to come up, but, ya know, a watched pot is slow to boil...best of luck with your brugs this winter!!!
