Help! When I got a Collie, I was really not too concerned about the work of grooming the fur. I'd always enjoyed grooming my old Akita mix. I would do it in the evenings while watching TV, and found it to be very relaxing.
But Darby is no submissive female Akita, to roll on his back and allow the human to do whatever they like with that nasty pin brush. Darby HATES to be brushed, especially his back end, and brushing him has become a battle of wills. I finally was able to get most of him by attaching two leashes to the porch railings, and cross tying him like you would a horse in a stable. But that does not stop him from bucking, and jumping, and backing, and squirming whenever I try to brush out his "skirt". It can really exhaust me some nights. I'm a single, so I have no one else around to help me hold him.
This is starting to get serious. He hasn't had a serious brush back there in over two weeks, and I'm so afraid he will start to mat. I suppose I could bite the bullet and send him to a groomer, but I've been quoted outrageous prices for brushing Collies. I just can't afford that all the time. I'm willing to purchased a grooming table with an arm - would that help enough to restrain him? Is there any other types of gentle restraints that I could use to hold him still while I brush him?
