I returned from being out of town and found my V. Peach cutting, that I rooted, looking like the attached photo. It's the only brug with this problem, so far. I'm in the process of spraying GardenSafe Fungicide 3, for broad mites and i would like to know if it would work for whatever has been eating V. Peach. TIA!!!
Pest help!!
I wonder if it's earwigs? They can do heavy damage if there's enough of em....
Thanks, Sue!! I just used Sevin, but I don't know if it killed them or if I drowned them. They were tiny bright green worms, lots of them, then I found two large chartreuse cats and I'm thinking those tiny worms were baby cats, ya think?? Will Sevin do it or do I need to use something else???? This happened over a couple of nights while I was away from home...
Cucumber beetles also. Something has laid eggs on back of leaf.
Thanks, Glo!! I checked to see if the Sevin only drown them and that's what it did, ugh!! So, I sprayed Insect Killing Soap with Seaweed Extract, and it worked with very little spray and worked on grasshoppers and ants too, and cleaned the pecan drip off the leaves. I'm ordering a gallon!!! It also says it is for mites, so maybe it will work on the broad mites that are plaguing my sweet brugs. Have any of you tried it, the brand name is : Safer...
I tried Bayer and it didn't work for me. I dust with Sevin in middle of brugs, right where bud comes, gets rid of earwigs, etc. until rain washes it away. I have used Avid, now Neem Oil, or any good mite/flea killer
Change whatever you use, every 2-3 times to something else, as mites seem to become immune to repelent.
Yet again, Glo, many thanks!! I know what you mean about the Bayer - I used Avid with great confidence, which is why the mites spread, with me sitting on my fan tanny, assuming that something that cost that much, would surely do the trick. I'm sold on the Insect Killing Soap/Seaweed Extract, which is Neem oil, and I could see it kill the cats, or whatever they were, grasshoppers, green worms, ants, and other bugs, as well as washed the leaves - the brugs definitely look better. As soon as the sun goes down some, I'm going to use it on the remainder of my brugs, I only got to do about 1/3 of them before the sun came back out, so I'll have a good chance to see which product, if any, does the trick on the broad mites. I'm also going to powder (Sevin) the middle, where the buds come in and see how that works. Thanks for the tip!! My neighbor just told me to use the Sevin powder around the bottom too, I'm gonna do that too, but watering so frequently might make it a waste of time. Next spring, you can bet I will start the season with a strong emphasis on bug control, whew!!!!
I have used the Safer insecticidal soap and it works well. I think it kills insects by drying them out - basically they get chapped to death ;-) so they can't develop resistance to it. Do be careful not to spray it in hot weather though since it can sometimes cause leaf burn. For mites, I alternate Avid and Kelthane so they don't develop resistance and so far that strategy has worked.
Also, if badly infested, they say to spray for 3 consecutive weeks, 7 day intervals/21 days, so as to kill all the new egg hatchlings. This is what I finally had to do to kill the broad mites on Passion Flowers also. I have really learned from past experiemnce, this is why I never had brugs blooming like all the others. This year, they are full, and lots of them blooming.
Yep, that definitely looks like caterpillar damage to me. Thuricide is specific for caterpillars of all kinds and doesn't harm other beneficial insects, but you have to reapply every time it rains. You can also use Orthene (that is a systemic insecticide) for caterpillars. I haven't used Sevin in a long time, does it say on the label that is works for caterpillars of any kind?
Mary, you are a dolly, thanks!!! Really helps, coming from someone, oh so close to my zone!!!
Sherry, I have never heard of Insect Killing Soap/Seaweed Extract. You said that was neem oil? Mary has said in the past brugs just love seaweed so you could be fertilzing as you bug kill..
