Proxy server problem

I cleaned up my computer (unistalled unused programs) and now I am getting this message when trying to connect with firefox via cable modem:

The connection was refused when attempting to contact the proxy server that you have configured. Please check you proxy settings and try again.

I am able to sign on with IE. Before I could use either program.

I am clueless as where to find my proxy settings and what to do with them to restore things back to the way they were. Can anyone help?

Edited to add that I also ran ad-aware and spybot.
