The "frost closet" is almost complete....

Pickens, SC(Zone 7a)

Lacking a basement or garage, my husband has been building me an insulated closet in one of my storage buildings. It will be kept above freezing ( I hope) by a couple of regular light bulbs set with a thermostat.

This will be a primarily dark place (not good light but there will be some from the bulbs) and rather cool. Dormancy will be the goal. The brugs in buckets will have most of the leaves removed and be allowed to get rather dry. My question is with the cuttings. I had this grand idea of putting the cuttings in water and leaving them all winter. Any suggestions?

I have heard that people including Monika do that Charlotta, but I have no experience doing it. Good luck! And lucky you to have a DH that is so helpful!

I did this with a bunch of cuttings last year and they did fine. The only one that didn't root was B. golden lady and she just rotted.

Charlotte, I have kept cuttings in water all winter. It is important to keep the water fresh. Sounds you have a nice place now for your brugs to go dormant.

Charlotte, I've heard from many others about keeping cuttings in a bucket with an aquarium air stone running--this keep the water aerated, keeps the roots from tangling, and best of all you don't need to change the water. I've already had one started for over a week and I must say -- I'm impressed!

Thats interesting but if you do that- you keep all your cuttings in one or two buckets. How do you keep the individual cuttings labeled ?

I have my seedlings growing in my mini greenhouse, I also have a couple of Brugs I purchased, and some cuttings in water, am I supposed to let those go dormant in the winter, I have a basement that stays fairly warm and planned on keeping them in there.

I might have a "tiny" bit of space inside for a few small things but not much. I dont want to kill the cuttings that a few nice people have offered.

? cuttings leave in water all winter (dark cool)
? if you potted them before rooting you couldnt let the soil dry out they would die
? remove all but a couple of leaves from the potted brugs going into the dormant room.
