Black Ginger 'Midnight'
Zingiber

This ginger has very dark green (almost black) leaves that light up when backlit.

Looks like a campfire at night, with those red leaves. Really cool plant. Thanks for posting it.

BUFFT690, I photographed these at a local nursery. I came home and researched them a bit and am going to buy a couple. The shiny almost black leaves are are a joy to behold as the sunlight shines through them. When you click on the name of the plant and look at the top of the page, there are 2 vendors listed who have these plants available for purchase. Click there and it will take you to further information.

Toxi, the reds and golds in the leaves as they are backlit do look like the flames of a campfire licking up in the air. I need to find a spot in my yard that is shady, but provides some sunlight to shine through the leaves in order to be able to capture the full beauty of these plants. I love my varieagated ginger I planted last year which has leaves almost 5.5 feet tall now. I didn't realize it would grow so fast in one year. Of course we did not have a hard freeze last year.

Thank you both for your comments.

kareoke, here is one place that has this plant available for purchase. The other vendor has Alpinia 'Midnight' which I don't think is not the same plant.
