Have seeds for Passiflora Aurantia

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I have seeds now for Passiflora Aurantia for SASE for about four people. There will be more later, but I will post when they are ready. Please post here and also, send me an email so I can send you my address if you are interested. They need to be started as soon as possible to get the best germination. I have not tired to germinate them, but they are fresh picked.

Brugie - I have a passion vine that has produced fruits for the first time this year. Can you enlighten me on how to best harvest the seeds from the fruits?

Thanks,
Onalee

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I'm not sure I do it right, but I clean off most of the gelatin from the seeds and let them dry long enough to mail, so they won't mold. Here is a web site that has some information about harvesting the fruit, but I haven't found anything telling how to care for the seeds. There are a couple of people here who grow lots of vines and maybe they will come by and tell us exactly how to do it.

I rub mine between paper towels, until clean, then dry on paper plates under a ceiling fan...
Just my method...

That's what I did and what a job. These seeds are small. I know they were ready because the pods were soft and yellowish and two of them fell from the vines and the other two just came off in my hand when I touched them. I do hope you all get some to grow. I've had seeds that have done well and others that I couldn't get anything to happen. I'll save ripe fruit until frost.

Brooksville, FL(Zone 9a)

Thanks for the site and the info. I was just so happy to see fruit for once! I've had these plants for 3 years now and they are huge and tons of blooms but no fruit until now! I even hand polinated them last year and nothing! From what I can figure, they need really full sun to make fruit - the plants in the shade have never had any. I gave my neighbor two plants from runners that came up and they put them in big pots in the blazing sun and they both have fruits on them! So the sun must be key to making fruit. I had no idea when to harvest them, so the site said to wait until they turned yellow and soft. Kind of discouraging though where it says 'plant immediately' for best results .. .

Thanks for the help!

I think they mean to plant as soon as you can. I have had luck with seeds that I have bought and who knows how old they might be. LOL!

(Taylor) Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

Onalee-
The sun may very well have had something to do with your neighbor's success in getting fruit, but I also think it is beacause they were planted in a pot. Root restriction causes a bonsai effect. It tells the plant that there is no more room to grow, so time to mature and reproduce.

Mine is in a pot with three others and they have all done very well this year. Only one has produced any pods, but I didn't try to hybridize with the others. I think this one selfs. JMO

seedpicker -
You may be right - both of the ones we gave them that they have in pots (they are large pots) have fruit, but the thing they have in common with mine that FINALLY got fruit is the full sun . . . I have maybe 80' of fence line COVERED in thick passion vine and only the small bit that is in full sun has gotten any fruit . . . I don't know. Maybe I'll try growing some in pots and see if I get more fruit that way . . .

Thanks for all your help!!

Brugie, got my seeds from you yesterday. Thanks so much!I hope when I get this hurricane mess cleaned up, that I will still have the desire to garden. Right now my heart isn't into it.Every day gets better though & I really appreciate everyone at DG! Thanks again for the seed. Melba

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I feel so bad for so many. I know you will get your "love to garden" back. It might take some time, but it will come. I'm doing fall clean up. That isn't fun and I have to push myself to do it. Don't rush at it....everything takes time. Wish I could help. LOL! The way I feel today, I would be no help to anyone. The surprise frost had me working all day yesterday and in the rain. I saved as much as I could. I guess we all have our problems. Yours in Florida have just be awful this year though. I hope you get no more hurricanes. The bad thing is that you just can't get away from them. Kind of like our tornadoes. They just aren't as big.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Well, frost came a lot quicker than I thought it would. I still have seeds for a couple more SASE's. Email me.

Greensburg, IN(Zone 6a)

Brugie I sent my envelope, did you get it yet, also just sent you email

Pennsburg, PA(Zone 6a)

If you have any left, I would love to have a few. Thanks

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I sent out two or three envelopes yesterday. I just pack and send the next day but honestly, I can't remember my name half the time. If it was a yellow envelope with padding, I know it went out plus two bubble mailers went out.

Meade, KS(Zone 6a)

Hi
If you have extras, I would love some seed. Thanks Janetlee

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I'm sorry. There won't be anymore because of the frost we got last night. Maybe next year I will have more or even some of the peeps that got seed this year.

Pennsburg, PA(Zone 6a)

Brugie,
Mailed my padded envelope along with a return label and postage today for the passiflora seeds. Thanks!

Navarre (NW FL), FL(Zone 8b)

I had this vine fruiting and I rubbed by the vine as I was watering and broke the fruit off. I have two different clones of this plant. Don't you just love the bloom. I stared at it for days. It's one of the few passiflora blooms that lasts longer than a single day. The bloom fades into different colors as it fades out.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Okay Dolores. I'll be watching for it.
BugFreak...I loved this vine all summer. It was a great bloomer. I wonder if it will take two years from seed if the folks here get the seed started right away?

Navarre (NW FL), FL(Zone 8b)

I'm not sure if 2 year is needed. They may have blooms before then.

Pennsburg, PA(Zone 6a)

Received my seeds today. Will start them immediately. Thanks for the offer!

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I'm glad they made it okay. Good luck.

Floresville, TX(Zone 9a)

Brugie, how long did it take your fruits to mature, and how large did they get? Mine has tons of them, the largest is pictured below.

That looks like they will be getting ripe soon. They got soft, but didn't change color much and would fall off the vine. When I checked, the seeds were nice and black and the inside was soft and smelled pretty good.
