Those in gulf states after Ivan

Crestview, FL(Zone 7b)

I have been absolutely swamped with ruby-throat hummingbirds since the passing of Ivan.. which destroyed so many of their food source. As my garden took a severe hit, all I had was two feeders... as each day brought more and more hummingbirds to the yard I have since purchased 4 more feeders and have them placed all around the house. This picture of 8 was taken this morning when I was trying to capture how many were eating at one time... I've counted over 12 at one feeder but was unable to get a picture of it..

So, if you live in and around where Ivan went through.. I know this probably isn't a priority... but think of the little hummers and their lack of food and set up a feeder for them. Breaktime over.. back to cutting down trees and limbs...

Mine have been extra active, too. Thanks for the reminder... I do have another feeder I can put up.

Wow MsM, that is simply incredible! I've never ever seen nearly so many hummers gathered together so closely all at the same time! And you say you've seen even MORE? Wow again! And good for you for putting out extra feeders for them so they can gather energy to search for the mosquitos that are probably building by the millions every hour after all that rain.

Amazing shots. I guess when they are hungry, they will share. I've noticed my feeders were emptying quicker than usual. Didn't think about their food sources being destroyed. Thanks MzMunchken.

Ha-ha-ha -- that last shot, they look like moths around a porch light! Like they might collide in mid-air they are so frenzied to get to that juice!

At least you don't have to worry about the food getting old or growing mold, eh?

Oh Wow MsM! that's just incredible! I'm pretty speechless at seeing so many hovering around a feeder all at once! Thanks so much for sharing this with us!

I continue to go through 1 gallon of feed every other day.. they are some hungry babies. Note the ONE male among all the females... I only see the males in the early evening.. wished I had more.. as it looks now it is 20-1... he has his own harum... too bad the "girls" won't let him eat in peace though.. they are bunch of rascals... they'll fight and chase like crazy and then it is like they call a truce and they all go and eat peacefully... and then off and fighting and chasing again.

Had two wrestle to the ground the other day. Then the next day they were gone. Guess they've left me for the year. Keeping the feeder up for any stragglers that haven't left yet and those still coming from the north.. It is so much fun to see so many, thanks for the pics.

I am not seeing them either but, will keep two feeders out until the first frost. I'm at 33 degrees latitude so am sure there will be some coming through here.
