Another 'bulb-planting' question...

Beaconsfield, QC(Zone 5b)

Hi all....thanks to those of you who have responded to my earlier cries for help on bulb planting! I still haven't planted yet -- must admit, I'm somewhat afraid to start as I bought so many bulbs and want to combine things properly....which leads me to my question: If I want 'clumps' of tulips, am I nuts to think that 'clump' can be composed of early, mid and late flowers? If I were to attempt to do this, would it make sense to have it broken down in the following manner: inner circle for late, outer circle for early and middle circle for mid-blooming? Or should it be the other way around? Or does it even matter, and should I just mix them all up in one clump and see what happens? I'm having trouble visualizing what the foliage of this 'clump' will look like with some flowers in bloom and some finished. Or is a 'combo clump' of about 12-15 bulbs a ridiculous thing to be attempting in the first place? And at this very moment, how many of you are having a good chuckle over my questions? LOL :-)

thanks,
Sharron

Hi Sharron,

I have not attempted to do what you are trying to do. I'm posting to bump this thread back up to the top so someone that may have done this will have some advice.

I have always planted my tulips in clusters, but all the same cultivar per cluster. I'm liking the idea of different ones in a cluster, and I'd also be interested in hearing from anyone that's done this.

Hi JoanJ......well, I'll let you know what happens in the spring because I've gone ahead and planted 4 clusters; combos of 'early/mid and mid/late in yellow/creams/white shades. I figure: nothing ventured, nothing gained, so, keep your fingers crossed! :-)
