planting in heavy tree roots

Any ideas on how I can get azeleas to grow under Magnolia Trees. The Magnolia trees have lots of shallow roots and its hard to get a hole dug. HELP. Maybe I should take a picture of the trees tomorrow 9-18 and show you the landscape. It is slightly sloped. There is two large Magnolias with brush or shrubs under them. The low limbs have been trimmed to let some light in.
