Canna Stuttgart

Seattle Burbs, WA(Zone 8b)

I love this one for it's foilage. Has anyone ever got a bloom from theirs? Would you mind sharing your photo with us? :-D

Brewers, KY(Zone 6b)

Sue, that one is on my 'want' list. I don't have it yet, but there is a picture of it here: http://davesgarden.com/pdb/showimage/9223/

in Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

I don't have that one either also on my"want list" . I love the foliage, and the flower is nice too.

Seattle Burbs, WA(Zone 8b)

Thanks guys. :) The bloom looks orange or peach in Abutilon's photo?

Premont, TX(Zone 9b)

Sue the bloom is peach , but sometimes the canna loses its varigatetion (mine did) and now looks like its parent omega..

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I have this one and the foliage can't take the sun here at all. Just a little morning sun will burn the edges of the leaves and what the sun doesn't burn, the winds will. It is touchy one for me anyway, but I love the variegation.

Gosh, I need to do better at proofing. Sorry. Bet that didn't make good sense for a while.

I have it too. I love it. It has the exact same color variegation as brug Snowbank. They look wonderful together and take the same shade conditions.

Seattle Burbs, WA(Zone 8b)

Good advice Ladies. Ours has some of the leaf burn also, but I thought I must have not watered well enough. :) Well, it's on the to-do list to be 'moved' to shade now. Think that's why it hasn't bloomed yet - because it is in full sun? I have grown it for two seasons now. It is about twice the size this year as last. Maybe just a slow grower.

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

Mine is two years old and it only has bloomed for me this year.

Seattle Burbs, WA(Zone 8b)

Liz how tall is yours? Ours is up to 2 feet. We have the same climate, do you have the same growth rate? I am hoping for more growth and perhaps blooms next year with the right spot in our garden!

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

Maybe 7ft? It's way taller than I am. They're in big pots.

Seattle Burbs, WA(Zone 8b)

.....................................................didja say 7'? OH what did I do wrong? Ack!.......................................

I'm having a serious case of Canna Envy! What did you feed them? LOL...........and don't tell me you didn't feed them! :-D

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

They are beside brugs so they get fed 20-20-20 whenever the brugs get fed. A lot I guess. But I had the burnout last year so they were huge and browned out. lol Maybe they're just getting used to where they are.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Mine is getting too much sun for sure. I've got it beside a brug, but the brug isn't shading it enough to keep it from burning. Mine is losing most of it's green, the leaves are pure white with a green stripe in the center. What am I doing wrong?

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I think this one needs lots of water, but why you are losing all the chlorophyll, I have no idea.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Thanks Brugie, I'll give it more water. I've got it between a banana and a brug and they are probably sucking up all the water. I'll be sure to give it a bit extra water and some more mulch.

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Cala.....I kept mine in my water lily pond and it was very happy this summer.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

I watered it real good Saturday, gave it some plant food too. Then Sunday we had a good rain, so hopefully it will straighten up.

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

Has anyone had good luck keeping it over the winter?
Either by dry and storing or potting it and keeping it growing?

Crestview, FL(Zone 7b)

mine overwintered in a cool greenhouse last year in a pot.. it survived..kept its leaves but grew slowly. I planted it in the swamp garden this summer and it started out doing really well and then it acted like it was rotting.. so I dug it up and planted it in a drier location. so far nothing has come back up from the tuber.. keeping fingers crossed that it didn't continue to rot after the move.

Archer/Bronson, FL(Zone 8b)

I certainly envy yall. Last I recall I had 2 remaining roots in the ground. One sent up a tiny shoot, then disappeared. I haven't seen hide nor hair since.

When I moved my garden, I dug in the 2 places I had planted them and there was nothing there. I gave up.

So I stick to the cannas that like me.

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

This was the first year I didn't buy one
I can never winter it over
I may get one next year and keep it in a pot.In fall I'll just stick it in the GH,see if that works

Seattle Burbs, WA(Zone 8b)

CC I have had success overwintering. I cover with a mound of compost. I am going to dig and move mine to shade this week and probably next to the house. And hope for the best...........

Interesting these can be grown in water! I will have to add that to my journal for next year.

Columbus, Ohio, United States(Zone 5b)

Almost all cannas love water. All of mine are set in the shallow area of the pond in full sunlight for the summer. Ever since i 've done this, my Stuttgart has never had burned leaves.

Seattle Burbs, WA(Zone 8b)

Thanks persona - gives me ideas for a small water feature, and re-thinking this through.

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

Mine are ALWAYS kept active all winter..I don't make them go dormant. They don't seem to take to dormancy very well. :--)

Yukon, OK(Zone 7b)

That is good information to know. I have one and planned to let it go dormant. Now I know better! Thanks!

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

I keep mine growing over winter.

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

Well----Thanks, Kyle. Perhaps I should not let it dry out and go dormant. Perhaps I should either put it lower in pond--the esculenta do fine--or dry it a bit and place in sheltered place and mulch it .
