Aechmea fasciata-Silver Vase-Anyone know anything about it?

Orangeville, PA(Zone 6a)

I have a question about my precious Aechmeas! Once they bloom, do they die? Do they bloom more than once? My husband had one that bloomed once but did not die for several years and had tons of pups. I also had one that bloomed and is still going, producing pups (but no more flowers) Now we have two more that just bloomed a few weeks ago, and are already growing their first pups. Fertile plants, they are! Just wondering what the truth is about flowering/dying cycles. I could not find anything on the rest of the internet, go fig. :) By the way, have a spare pup if anyone's interested...but would like to trade for something *really* unusual or exotic! I'm not sure if the pup is spined or "Primera" (not spined), would have to check (I grow both). -gt-

Gthumber,
Bromeliads typically will bloom and put off pups for a long time . They usually only bloom once then send off a pup or two, some more than that. Some depends on the variety of bromeliad. I have even had bromeliads that look totally dead with no green leaves left and then they start pupping on the "bare root" so I seldom throw any away. The most important thing probable to know is to be sure and change the water in the cup out and let the center air out a day or two to prevent rot from setting in. After the pups get about 1/3 the size of the parent you can cut them off and pot them up...sometimes this will encourage more pups from the parent plant. You can also leave them on the parent plant to make a larger arrangement like for a hanging basket. When the parent plant really starts looking bad just cut it back almost to the top of the rootball.
Broms are so easy to grow and about the only thing Broms don't like is being too wet & too cold.

Hope that helps ya some.

the one i had gave me 7 or 10 pups....maybe more...i dont remember...lol.....so when they bloom be on the look out...i have had other broms that have put out pups, and still havent bloomed.....not all broms are the same....another thing about broms....they do not have a very extensive root system so they can be grown in some small pots..i have one that is in a 2 inch pot....well the pup is, the mother has since gone

Hi. I think someone posted a thread to me wanting to trade me a hoya for an aechmea. It was a new thread and after I read it on my watch list it disappeared(!) and now I don't know how to contact that person. I do not remember the name, either! :( I sorry! But I would definately be interested in a trade, if only I could find that person again.....

My fasciata has produced 7 pups so far, and doesn't look like it's ready to quit - still looks healthy.
