My hibiscus sampler

Oviedo, FL(Zone 9b)

Here is a picture my daughter took this afternoon. {don't you just love digital cameras?} My hibiscus have responded to the alternating good rain and sun, remnants of the various hurricanes to bloom like crazy; The two double ones are from the same plant as are the two dark pink singles. I got them all from the grocery store except the pink single which came to me 19 years ago as a gift plant. I have a pink double and a yellow as well, but they are between bloom spurts at the moment. The red and yellow one almost succumbed to an aphid attack this winter, but you would never know that now! I love hibiscus!

They are beautiful. As you can tell by my user name, that I too love hibiscus. I probably have 12-15 plants. I am constantly starting cuttings, in case someone wants to trade.

Garden mart..very beautiful..but I'll tell you a secret with hibiscus....if you pick the flowers first thing in the morning after they open..they can sit on a table be pinned to a curtain etc..with no need for a vase or water..I have a variety that a picked flower thrown on the ground stayed open and nice for 3 days before wilting. In hibiscus shows down south they just set the stem in a holder and the flower lasts well all day.Women in Hawaii wear them behind their ears too!!. Just a tip. Saves looking for vases!! :-)

Thanks for the tip! But we had so many yesterday we just clipped them in the afternoon. Nearly all of these still have other flowers blooming on them outdoors. The big pink one is still open inside

What part of OHIO?

Love that pink/white edge.

Dear Hibiscus,
My hubby is born in Rocky River and raised nearly all his life in Upper Arlington, suburb of Columbus. His folks still live in Dublin.
That edge is actually yellow. the indoor flash kinda whitened it out. I will try and take a picture of it outdoors that is better after Hurricane Ivan finishes up with our neck of the woods. Lots and lots of rain since early saturday morning. done now I think.

Hi, gardenmart
I love your pics. Do you ever trade for other perennials? If so I am interested.

I think tropical Hibiscus will always be my first favorite. I keep buying more and kill a few every winter. My oldest one is 8 years old and I have come close to killing it several times.

Spidermites are my main killer here. Have to watch for them constantly.

I get aphids indoors about February. This dark pink hibiscus is 19 1/2 years old. I got it just before my son was born. The others are all 5 yrs or less. I have never made cuttings of these. I could try to do that. If they are successful, I will let you know here. I usually pick them up at the supermarket when the blooms have passed and they are marked down.

I have three of the double peach ones. See the "Ooops!" picture One of these is about 4 feet tall and trained to a standard, that is, a tree on top of a single stem. It is very large. the other two are small shrubs but still sizeable. I love them all!
