little black bugs
Well, I'll take a stab at it here, sounds like you might have fungus gnats, though I have never heard of them biting, flying up the nose~yes, getting in your tea~yes, but not biting....so it might not be the gnats. Are they for sure BITING and not just BUGGING? For the gnats, if you put a layer of gardening sand on the top of your pot soil, it should take care of them.
Are you sure they are coming from the plants?

Raven, I think so. Can't think of were els they would be coming from. My DH is the one that says they are biting him. They just bug me. LOL Were els might they be coming from. We haven't had much rain so no standing water out side. I do see them flying around the plants. And because I have plants in every room , I see the bugs. Thats what they remind me of is nats. I also don't have fruit setting around. I know you can gets nats from them.Only my MOM always called them fruit flys. Will try the sand if you think that will work. Thanks, Binky
Fruit flies are different from the fungus gnats, you would definitely be able to tell them apart~fruit flies are larger, and more of a brown color and oddly enough, you can see their eyes! :O)
The fungus gnats are very small and flit all over the place, and to me, they look really dainty, not pudgy like the fruit flies!! :O)
The sand should do the trick, just make sure that you aren't leaving any of the dirt in any of your pots uncovered, because if they are in one plant and not another, they will move, so it's best just to cover all of your dirt.
Good luck, and good growing to you!

Binky, I just read this post on another forum about gnats:
Hi All,
I was looking up info on how to get rid of fungus gnats, and i wrote down several to try. As i was having a problem with fungus gnats and even by letting the soil dry before watering, still seemed to be on there.
So today i tried one and it works!!
the one i tried was for 1 tablespoon listerine mouthwash to a gallon of water. What i did was put a little in the small spray bottle and then diluted that with water and then sprayed the plants where i saw the fungus gnats and im happy to say that tonite there is not a fungus gnat flying around the plants i sprayed :). they had been around the ones on my kitchen windowsill. I was just tired of them being around my plants but didnt want to use a harsh chemical to get rid of them and so i figured i would try some of the alternative methods that i saw posted.
Hope This Helps someone else out.
Plantnutz1, Thanks, and I have Listerine to!! Do you know if its ok to use the flavored ones? We use the mint ones. Will make them smell minty hehe. Binky
