Seed Identification.... Is there info somewhere ?

Osage City, KS(Zone 5b)

Is there a website or a link from DG that contains information on how to identify and collect various seeds...? Some are obvious like Castor Beans and Hibiscus, but some are a little trickier for first time collectors. I received an envelope full of what my friend thought was Coneflower seeds. She'd plucked the sharp pieces of the flower head, thinking that was the seed - there were very few actual seeds inside. I'm sure next spring she'll have a nice surprise somewhere in her yard.....

I'm sure I could benefit from this information a well as I start collecting....... Thanks

Try this, I thought the link posted had some pretty good pics of seeds and seedlings.

Also, here is a good pic of coneflower seeds.

You might want to try this site:

The other thing I've done is emailed people who posted pictures on Daves Garden of the plant and asked them for advice - there is also a 'saving seeds' forum here that you can ask advice on.

That was a good pic of coneflower seeds........ what a great idea to take that kind of picture....... Us "seedlings" need an entire subject Tab dedicated to pictures of the flower, the seed and the collection process. I think I'll lay some of my seed collecting out next to the plant and take pics for reference in the spring.......

OMG! I can't believe I missed the Saving Seeds forum! How did I miss that one?!? Thanks for mentioning that onalle. I have looked over the forum choices quite a few times and had no idea.

I thought the coneflower pic was good too - I had some unidentified seeds I had gotten in a mixed pack and coming across that pic was how I knew what they were. For some reason, I had in my mind that coneflowers seeds would look similar to rudbeckia seeds - they're not even close!
