Somewhere I have an old picture of this same tree, taken about 12 years ago or so. The hole was open and looked like a donut. I am afraid that the tree may eventually choke itself...the hole is now only about 1/2 inch across.

Thanks, Hazel. It was sunset and the sky was actually a pretty pink but the photo did not capture it too well.
