Received the new catalog from Charley's Greenhouse & Garden on Saturday. Took me awhile to figure out why it was in a mailer envelope and then in a file folder inside......nice Gift Certificate in my name and a picture of my greenhouse taken last year on page 12. :-)

My greenhouse is "The Cascade" 10 x 12 with optional double doors.
Nice surprise from Charley's
How wonderful for you Candy !! I can certainly see why it would be in the catologue! It looks just beautiful!! I have to check and see if I have my latest edition...
Margie
Hi Margie -
It's the Fall 2004 edition (mine has an orange cover.) :-) I've already tagged it and put it away so it doesn't end up in the kids "collage" magazines or in the trash!
Have you gotten any further with your search for a greenhouse?
So pretty Happenstance! I am in the process of getting an estimate on a lean to greenhouse on the back of my garage. The guy worked for a greenhouse company for over 30 years..and does this on the side. I hope I can afford him...lol!!
Candy -- congrats! That's so fun!!! Unfortunately I think I pitched mine before I even opened it this time :( Maybe they'll send me another ...
Candy, are you going to heat it this winter, and if so what have you decided to heat it with. I have a 10 x 14 double walled polyurthane greenhouse that I put up in June. I am still trying to figure out what to heat it with this winter. A friend told me that she used a Delonghii's electric heater to heats hers in Sacramento last winter and it only cost her about $20. extra a month. But I think we get colder here. Anyway, just noticed that you live close to me, so I thought I would ask you.
Patricia
I think this will be the third winter for my greenhouse (anyone else have trouble with time flying and forgetting when things happened?!). The first year I didn't do anything......lost a couple of small Euphorbias from my collection. They don't really like temps below 50 at all.
Last year I made an attempt to heat it to a consistant 50F. Didn't really see that much of a change in the electric bill, but also didn't see that much difference in the plants either. I still lost a couple small Euphorbias (they don't like damp or cold, so this year all the E. are coming into the sunroom for Nov-Feb. I bought an inexpensive Honeywell 4foot long space heater with a digital thermostat. It worked well, but unless we have a very cold winter I don't think I'll bother. We haven't had a frost in the six years we've been here and the low temp for the last two years has been 39F for a couple hours in the early mornings. Prior to having my greenhouse I left most things outside and think I will not be bringing as many things into the greenhouse this winter. The problem with packing it full is you can't really work in it over the winter, which is something I missed last winter. Because it got so warm so early this year, everything was back outside in early February.
I'll be in Mexico for a couple of weeks in November and would rather have things outside in case we get one of those late heat waves that sometimes happen.
Here's a thread posted last fall when I was closing up the greenhouse:
http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/406583/
For 15 years I refused to raise the temperature in the greenhouse above 50-55 degrees because of the cost. I lost a lot of plants because of my "thriftiness". This past winter, I increased the temperature to 60 degrees, and lost only one plant (probably to overwatering). This past winter I really got into orchids (acquired about 135 since November 2003), and absolutely HAD to raise the temperature. It was really a learning experience: when the cultural instructions say "minimum temperature = 60 degrees", they don't mean "unless you're incredibly cheap and try to grow them at 50 degrees"!!!
I have several euphorbias, and WON'T try growing them in the 40-45 degree greenhouse -- I'll just have to find room in the warmer one. I have a couple euphorbias in flower now, and colors are amazing! One of them is a gray-leafed variety, and has the most amazing red-orange blossoms. I'm really impressed!
