"Where does one stop"...

San Jose, CA(Zone 9a)

A member in another post asked this question. I was going to answer her post and then decided to make it a new thread! Because that is the question I have been asking myself all week! Where DOES one stop? A very nice DG member wrote and asked me if I wanted a cutting that she had offered me earlier....I wrote back "yes, and what else do you have!" I have gone from never hearing about a brug in March to about 30+ right now!

How do you say no or stop? I don't have the answer....Does anyone??? I sure would like to hear your answers!!!

BTW...I went from never knowing daylilies 2 years ago to having over 200 now...many in containters! As you can see I really don't know how to stop!!! Maybe I should have titled this post HELP !!!!!

I think sometimes more is just more.. Not better. I've cut my number WAY back by keeping only those plants that perform and bloom almost all season for me. I don't have the room or the time to baby one of these big honking plants only to be rewarded with one small flush. I also want plants that handle the heat and aren't bug magnets. I also have to winter these monsters over so space is always a issue for me. I have a handfull of plants out there that have bloomed all season for me. I wouldn't be without them. I also have a few out there that won't come in this winter. Some of my favorites that have bloomed almost all season are Kyle's Pink, Golden Lady, Creamsickle, Rosamond, Mayan Magic, Charles Grimaldi, Halo Peach, two un-named seedlings and Maya. It's nice to have blooms all season.

datdog...you are right. Maybe after I see which one perform well for me, I will start eliminating some. Right now I am not at that stage yet. I have barely seen a bloom. Actually what added a lot to my collection is growing seeds from others. Especially when they haven't bloomed yet, I feel like I cannot just abandon them to mother nature! And yes, of course I also asked for more seeds, so my collection has no where to go but up right now.

Some days I do question what I am doing, as they do bring on more work, but it is work that I enjoy and the thrill of seeing them not only budding, but just growing makes me feel so good. I guess that is my problem....my feelings over-ride my head and logic! Not something new for me! I guess I kind of answered my own question in a way.

Thank you for your logic! I could use some!!

Then your right on track and don't need to cut down on the number just yet. Enjoy them! There is nothing better then seeing the first bloom. :)

And smelling the first bloom, then you are really hooked!

I still have two of the first three I got. My first year I had one. This year I may get rid of those first loves and maybe cut back a few more. I love them, but I've been way to obsessive and have to give myself room for some other things that I love as well. I'm going back into daylilies a bit. A plant that doesn't require so much attention, but I doubt I'll ever be without brugs. Growing brugs from seed appeals to me because they don't require so much room and can be grown in smaller containers as well as the ground. I hope I don't have to eat my words next year. LOL! I really am trying to cut back.
