This morning I found this on the leaf of one of my brugs...and also a bud, chewed up....do you think it was this insect that chewed it? or is this harmless to brugs? Not sure if it is a grasshopper or not.
Does this insect do harm???
Looks like a katydid to me... I dont know if they do damage or not, I would assume maybe so, since they are related to grasshoppers. I dont know what kind, or how much damage tho.
Yes, they eat leaves and will eat all the buds and flowers from a brug.
Thank-you both...I saw two this morning and killed them....just didn't want to keep killing them if they were harmless. They are very hard to see, they blend in so well with the leaves. Do you know if they are out in the cool mornings, rather than later in the day?
Talk about blending in. You can hardly see it
I've seen those during the day but close to sundown, they start their chirping. Their chirp reminds me of the the chirping sound that frogs make in Texas. Well, atleast when I asked what was making the chirping sounds, I was told they were tree frogs. Anyhow, I have never seen them actually chewing on the plants but I figure they must be doing it cause they love to be on my weeping cherry tree & Kwanza cherry tree which have holes chewed up on their leaves. Those darn grasshoppers and slugs are the ones chewing my brugs.

My word, Margie, no wonder I have so many chewed leaves!! I wondered what they were too, I don't recall seeing anything exactly like them before, but maybe so. Ya think Avid would work on them???? I was under the impression that they killed other harmful bugs, because I saw one, a katydid???, eating another bug. I'd really hate to kill something that could be beneficial...
Sherry, check out this link....it tells about the damage they do...

Good grief, Margie, thanks so very much!!! I should have looked into this before now, but they were so healthy and green, I just didn't have a clue that they were eating the brugs. I'll never get ahead or even goal to go in brugs, I have way too much to learn!!! Thanks, for the much needed info, picturelady...
