Air Layering

Have you used Sphagnum or peat moss for air layering ? Which do you think is best ?

I recommend Spaghnum. Peat moss is to acid for rooting.

Thanks Monika,

You reinforced my thoughts on this subject. Some articles say peat but as you said ... too acid. Maybe they can use peat on other plants ?

Luckily I have Spaghnum on hand for my orchids. Darn stuff can be really hard to find around here .

I'm going to try the method on the bottom half a huge seedling that was snapped in two by the wind . Nothing to lose =)
I have the top portion rooting in water.

Gretchen , Danke !

I've used spaghnum and have had good results air-layering with my dogwood tree. I had trouble locating it myself, but luckily the nursery I was at around Mother's day had some and I got it there. Wally world didnt even have the stuff.

Sorry to hear about your plant snapping due to the winds.

Scoot -- Darn it about the seedling! I had the same thing happen at the end of August on a PBXEP that has thrown some beautiful blooms out of the same pod, so I felt is was worth salvaging. I cut up the pieces and planted them horizontally, placed in sealed plastic bags. All six pieces have rooted and "shooted", and the bottom of the plant that's still in the ground has new growth too. I sure hope it has a pretty bloom, otherwise I'll be kicking myself for taking up all this room........ Good luck with yours!!!

Aren't you all just getting a little sick of the winds and heavy rains? I sure hope next summer is more normal. Broken brugs are becoming the norm this year. Sorry Scoot. Hope you have a good rooter there.

Sorry, Scooterbug. I haven't had any to break as of yet but I sure have some laying over and some dying from the top down from being too wet. I think it's been a bad Brug year for most all of us.

Seems like every one os having cruddy weather this year .... even Monika and Tonny =(

This will be my first air layering project. Got nothing to loose. The top section that broke off is being rooted.and the remaining trunk is about 3 ft tall and sprouting all over.

I hope it roots for you. I've thought about trying this on some vines I have. If it works for you, I'll try it. LOL
