Linda, I am assuming a spike is a dracaena, you know the tall things that go in the middle of a pot??? They grow as annuals, but I have let them grow year round and have had some for 4 years, although I lost them in the freeze last January. They are like a mini palm tree when they get large.
I think they are called a cordyline????
