I want to place an order w/Van Englen this fall for several of the fritillaria. One being the Frit. meleagris - guinea hen flower (100 bulbs), but I haven't heard anything on the forums about it. They look pretty in pics, but then again, I have had many experiences with plants that look great in the catalogue and then it is a different story when they grow in my yard.
Please give me your feedback on the Frits. I want to make sure that these bulbs will grow like in the pics, are hardy to my zone, do they naturalize and spread (before I order 100 bulbs). Anything about the other Frits is welcome too: Persica and michailowskyi
Thanks!
Guinea hen flowers/fritillaria meleagris - info needed
My friend and I planted some of these last fall and they came up this spring. We are in zone 5 and they did fine. They are fairly small and delicate, but very pretty. I only have the one year with them, don't know how they do in following years. You can certainly get fewer than 100 if you want to try them. I know that www.johnscheepers.com has them. They are actually the same company but have smaller quantities, and a very good garden watchdog rating.

I am a frit lover, the meleagris is one of my favorites. I have a nice bunch of them that has been coming back for about 5-6 years, but have tried to get more started, and not had overwhelming success. But I will continue to try to increase my numbers, I just love them. The persica is also very nice and different, I had two last year, and one performed great, the other, just along side of it, not so well, go figure....... Now the michaelovsky, I have a small colony, and they are to die for. If I was better at my picture organization, I could show you how neat they are. I want to have all the varieties eventually, there's a pontica, pudica, uvi, and others. One of my "wants!' I am zone 4 so I would not hesitate if I were you! Legit
