and congrats

I'm still trying to figure out what kind mine is.....
do you know if yours are edible?

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

Thats too cool! I only get nanas on the flowering kinds..they don't count!! LOL

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

oh Don.........you are truly "the Tropicman"!!

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

You have to keep them over the winter, and palnt again in the spring.
2 years it takes to produce the amount of leaves to flower and fruit,so early in the spring when new growth starts,I pump the nitrogen,46-00-00 mix to tablespoons to gallon water and feed at the base of plant, every 2 weeks.
Plus all the grass cuttings around the base as well, constant feeding, its a set amount of leaves that has to develope before the flower and fruit appear.
Thanks everyone,BTW the banana is Orinoco.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Orinoco??? Then where are MY bananas?!
Looks awesome!

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Tropicman, if I cut off leaves do the plants then take longer to flower? The leaves were getting in my way so I chopped some of the lower leaves off my Ice Cream nana and a few other varieties. My Orinoco has most of it's leaves though. I must learn to plant them farther back from the walkways.

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Chele, there was reported a monkey on the loose!!!LOL!
Cala, yes the more leaves the faster the growth, and faster to flower and fruit.
Remember they heavy eaters and drinkers, and the leaves gather the sun which turns into energy into food for the roots to take in distribute to the plant.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

OK, I'll quit chopping the leaves off!

New Madison, OH(Zone 5a)

WTG Don! Question: If the leaves are turned brown...still don't cut them off???

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Yes if brown a shreiveled up,cut them off,for they've done there job.

New Madison, OH(Zone 5a)

Ok..thought so...thanks.

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

me want to go home........Don tell your nanners they are much better off in Kansas this year!!

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

I just seen the lastest on Ivan,It looks pretty darn scary too, after I saw what it did to Grenada,I'm afraid I'd be heading to the hills!

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

me too!!

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Awesome, Don! You will have to let us know how they taste. I bet they taste like sweet victory!

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

I don't think there will be enough time for them to ripen, before the first frost.but you never know about Kansas weather!!!

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Will they continue to ripen in the greenhouse? I hope so! You should be able to taste the fruit of your labor -- literally!

Tellico Plains, TN(Zone 7b)

Tropicman

You have done a great job. I still remember the ones that grew in our back yard when we lived in FL.
The flower stalks are pretty awesome, Huh ?

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Clare this tree is about 20 ft tall to tip of a leaf, its just to tall to dig up,maybe it will get closer to ripening before a hard frost occurs, yes I'd love to taste the fruits of my labor!!LOL!
SCB,yes the flowers are just awesome and so heavy, and you can smell them 5 ft away or better.

Brookeville, MD(Zone 7a)

Things always taste so much better when you grow them yourself. I hope winter comes slowly so you can harvest,

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Thanks CM,me too!
