Coreopsis Tutorial

(Zone 7a)

Hi, I have recently received Coreopsis seeds in trades. I received Chaff with no seeds. I also recently purchased some burgundy coreopsis from Ebay. The same problem...I love Coreopsis and hope when you're gathering your coreopsis seeds. You will now be more informed about the seeds. If your Coreopsis makes seeds, every seed has a uniform shape. All the seeds when ripe are identical. Here is a picture of a coreopsis posted by Joy.

When the flower fades from this coreopsis (shown in picture) the fuzzy stuff is left in the center. This is NOT the seed. The seed is shaped like a banana, hard, and black when it's ripe. Each flower head makes more then fifty seeds. The seeds are attached to the fuzzy stuff. If the seeds are not ripe then they wont be black. Therefore this is how the fuzzy center is mistaken for the seed.

Kim,
Thanks for posting. Interesting.

Thanks for posting.....I've noticed the fuzz was not the seed, but so far I haven't found any 'actual' seed yet. :(

Very interesting - Good thing to know

You know what I checked mine and I see no banana like seed??

You should post a picture of the seed in the plant data base, my Lance leaf Coeopsis produced so much seed that every one in my neighborhood had them growing on the sides of the garage, ditto on the Shasta Daisy and Purple Coneflower.... easy no care required plants. I miss them!

This would help greatly... and Kim I have the dark Burgundy one and will share seeds if I can find them. The flowers looks dry and I tried two more and saw nothing??? Thanks everyone

I have coreopsis verticillata: Moonbeam, Sweet Dreams & Limerock Ruby - these are hybrids and I suppose this is why I can't find any seeds on them? Just dried flowers and chaff. Do any of the verticillata's make seeds?
