For the Love of a Brug,
A new story began. A story that makes me want to skip, say "so cool, oh yeah, and wooohoooo"!
My seedlings have just started budding. One has 8 one them.
The most fantastic feeling comes across you as you anticipate their opening, and watch the buds continue to grow.
Even watching them from 1” was a kick. Because I mixed up my Canna markers with my Brug Markers, I thought my Canna seedlings were Brugs. Someone painfully clued me in.
But two weeks later, there were the Brugs….. popping through the soil and definitely not Cannas.
Nursing them on a daily basis, I took care of the 5 seeds that had come up. 3 Suave X and 2 Isabellas.
Hubby saw the buds today, that we watched grow from a centimeter to a now 2 inches (yep – it’s a ways off, but maybe they are smaller the first year?) and he said to me “yep – those are pretty cool plants to watch.”
I think he loves them just as much as I do. I can’t wait for the blooms (I think he’s anticipating as well).
I now understand this “love for the brug” because it is sort of a passion.
I have also found that it is a family love for the brug thing. I hope we always remember that.
Thanks to you who make this such a wonderful place that we can share our "glee"!
For the "LOVE" of Brugs.......
Karrie...I share your feelings...I /we are watching my brugs growing from seeds also. No buds yet, although I will have to go out and really search this time! My dutura from seeds are budding and blooming and I am excited by those.
Just planning to get a portable green house to keep my seedlings and cuttings so that they can grow again next year. Will you keep your over the winter? Where will you keep them? Just looking for ideas!
This is a wonderful place to share our glee! Such happiness a flower can bring and such a group of friends it can make out of strangers the world over... thank you for sharing your happiness with me! :-))) I love the time I spend on DG's! Thanks all !!!
Margie
I'm keeping them in the house, but haven't decided exactly where yet. All 5 of mine are quite large, so I just don't know where to make room! It's too dark in our basement. One in every bedroom? lol!
Karrie , you can let them go dormant on the dark basement or even a closet. Easier than fighting spider mites for 5 months on plants trying to grow in minimal conditions in the house. This is my opinoin. and I'm stickin' to it ...... lol

Good Luck
Boy, Scoot really meant it. LOL! I gave a brug to a friend a few years ago and she kept hers in a closet for the winter, bringing it out in about March. It took right off. Not a bad idea, I just don't have enough closets. I can't do the basement thing anymore. Too much work getting everything down there and back up again. I'm going to keep mine in the garage that doesn't freeze and hope for the best.
well kewl! And then I can just give them minimal water? I have a perfect spot down in the basement that is near a big sink - would be perfect set up for watering them easily. The basement gets pretty cold, but not like a freeze.
Karrie -- what happened to your sunroom? Seems like that would be a good place if you don't want them to go dormant... I will keep a few of mine going in the greenhouse and get a few cuttings started in case some of mine in the ground don't come back....
The sunroom is only good in early spring to early summer. It is not heated, and not insulated, and would cost a great deal to heat (most of the heat would go out the windows). Then, after the days start getting warmer, it's over 85 (sometimes up in the 100's) in it, so I can't have plants in there in mid to late summer either, or they'll bake to death. I wish I could use it during the winter, but it just isn't feasible - way way to costly. I use it mostly for starting seeds, in early spring - PERFECT for that, except that it doesn't have a sink. :-(
Another note on this subject about how we love our brugs..... one I just thought about as I was on the front porch - I saw my two tall ones, Isabella X's, quite tall and budding. One actually a foot taller than ther other after I moved them onto my front porch - so I moved the shorter one near the tall one of course........ then I saw that little prodigal son.
The one that I had given to my neighbor last spring, and she returned to me about mid summer with it and said "I just don't have time - can you help this? I still want it back!"
Well, the condition she gave it back to me was definitely stunted from what the others it was close to in birth....... and I had to pick of 75% of the leaves.
And she wants my prodical son back?
Nope! I've grown very attached to this particular Brug for his fight for survival and the nice way he's doing it. He's not real tall, not like he should be compared to the others his birthdate, but he's much much stockier.... and now showing great leaves - very very Bushy plant, and a delight to add to my living room this winter. (yep - this one's going to stay with mom - others somewhere else).
Not sure what to say to Cindy. But - she can't have him back.
karrie....why don't you tell Cindy she is right, brugs are a lot of care and you are sure they are not the right plant for her. Maybe you could then give her something else!
Glad you got your baby home!
