Passiflora incarnata seed pods galore-now what do I do?

Belmont, NC(Zone 7b)

I just picked at least ten lime-sized seed pods from my passiflora incarnata. Didn't plant it and don't know who did, so I'll just say thanks, Lord! Opened some of them up and they look just like the post by Thaumatagaurist on July 3, 2003. Sorry, don't have a digital. I pulled them out of the pod and have them drying on paper plates. Is this right? If I can get this right will be glad to share. Each pod has about 80 seeds. Please help. I am in zone 7b, but these can go up to 6a for anyone that would care to have some. Imagine they must have to dry out first, then place them in waxed paper? When I plant in Spring do they just go straight into my garden soil?

I would be interested in some seeds for a SASE. Please send your addy. Thanks!

smooth,
Try this site, there are many others, but I can't locate them..lol. if you scroll down a little on this one, it will give instructions on germinating seeds. Hope this helps. I will try to find the one in the UK that is really a good site. This is my first year with passion vines so I don't reallly know how to clean the seeds, but I think they need to be sown as quickly as possible so they don't dry out to much, they have a better chance of germinating that way. Gourd:
Are you saying I should plant the seeds w/out drying them first?

Delores: Be glad to send you as many as you want. Just need to figure out what to do first.
Maybe I should be sending you the unopened pod?

Need more help here. The first website din't explain what to do w the seeds after removing them from the pod. I couldn't get the 2nd one to work. Will see if i can find something.
If I plant them now will be Spring before they can go outside.

Hope this one works..

I don't know where I read this, but it said that the fresher the seeds the better chances of germination. I purchased several types and colors on the internet and almost none of them germinated, they were sowed in January of this year. I nicked them with a nailclipper and soaked them. They were either older than the hills, or ???? All the ones that I traded for that were fresh, germinated and some even got flowers this year. Also, in one of the sites it says to soak the seeds in orange juice or the fruits own juice, that is probably why they say to plant them fresh, because you don't have to soak them later on to soften the seed.

Hopefully someone can address the cleaning of the seeds, you may want to use a strainer and take off the jelly stuff, then dry them on a paperplate for at least one week. That is how long I dry other seeds, but don't know for sure. I did get a trade from a man in FLA with the seeds still with the jelly stuff on them in a baggie, he did that so they would not dry out. I do not know which is the right way. If you want to preserve some, then yes, clean them, dry them and store in a paper envelope. If you use a plastic baggie they will mold if they have not been dried long enough. (that is what I do with other types of seeds I dry)

Gourd:

Thanks. Guess I'm doing this rt, although one of the websites said not to pick the pods-wait til they fall off. I picked these but they look very robust. Do you want any of these seeds or pods ?

Dolores: Do you want me to send you seeds or pods?

hi-
I always use paper towels. I put a bunch of gooey seeds between a couple of paper towels and rub them between the paper towels to get the goo off. I put them through about three sessions of this, and then they are clean. I then set them out on a paper plate underneath our patio's ceiling fan for a couple of days.

I dry mine first, then sow/trade as soon as I can.

Gourd is correct, the fresher they are, the better and quicker they will germinate. I've sown fresh seed that I had just dried, and had it come up in just four days!

Just as a test, I also tried to sow some fresh off the paper towel(not dried). These didn't germinate as well, or at all, so I always dry mine first.
This is what works for me...

I've got tons of this.....if anyone wants a pod (or two or three) let me know. They're taking over the entire front left of my property!!!!

Justified:

Are they incarnata ? Many passion flowers aren't hardy in this area. I would LOVE to have some red, but I don't think they are hardy here.
One of the web sites said the plants only last about four yrs, I have been in this house four yrs and so has my neighbor (they are on the fence) and I know neither of us planted them. These plants don't look like they are petering out any time soon. Wonder where they came from?

I've gotten a lot of "gifts" from the birds.
It is very possible that a bird ingested some seeds, and happen to "deposit" them later, into your garden.
The sweet birdies have delivered a passiflora lutea and trailing fuzzy beans into my garden.

Mesilla Park, NM

smooth, sent you mail.

Justified, sent you mail too.

I would love some seeds/pods..

Mesilla Park, NM

I have to tell you that I got so frustrated with the seeds that I ordered, that I went and purchased most of the passionvines I got this year. One was vitifolia (red) but I have not been able to root a darn cutting of that one nor has it set seed pods. I try to pollinate it with everything and anything, but get nothing. It is the only red I have so far. I will keep trying. The one gallon plants here costs as much as it does to pay for a pack of seeds plus shipping from these companies around 6.00.

You would have to probably bring them in for the winter in your zone or plant it in a protected area.

Pennsburg, PA(Zone 6a)

If you have enough pods to pass around, I'll take one! LMK how much postage to send. Thanks.

Cassopolis, MI(Zone 5a)

HI smooth
just sent you an email offering to trade for seeds but if you would rather have sase thats fine also.

I would be thrilled to have a few of the seeds.

smooth...the passiflora incarnata are indigenous to NC and are probably "wild". We have them popping up all over here, and love them! They are my most favorite "wild flower"!

You can easily dig up the plant, roots and all, if you like and let it over-winter in a pot. (It'll go dormant.) Or you can just mark the spot it is in and watch for new plants in the late spring.

The seeds from the fruit (maypops) will germ most quickly when the fruit is a copper/tan color, not green. And you can plant them at that stage directly from the pod...just rinse them a bit if you like....some folks believe the gel has a germination inhibitor in it.

I think you are now like me...addicted to passiflora!! ;>)

Belmont, NC(Zone 7b)

Great to talk w someone else who is from this area of NC. Have been in Gaston County since '83 and never seen these before. I have to admit, I pay attention more than I used to.

Will look up everyone's addresses, if they are on file, for the pods. and send out the pods immediately. The seeds are not copper yet, still drying out. You can send me back whatever the postage was, since I have no idea what to charge. Let me know if they make it OK.

My address is on file now under Extras.

Yes I'm addicted to anything that survives my gardening which is kind of erratic but obsessive,

Last nite, while fixing supper, my daughter asked if she could go get a few maypops for dessert...she loves eating them! Came in and put about five of them in our big bowl of wild grapes we had picked the day before. What a fruit plate that is! All from the wild!

As for the seeds you have drying, Jay...I meant in the above post that the pods themselves will turn tan, not the seeds inside. Didn't mean to mislead you.

Belmont, NC(Zone 7b)

Oh, does that mean after you pick them- or on the vine??

I was just about to pick and mail some today. All my pods are green. Guess the ones drying on the paper plates can go in the trash, then.

Thanks so much for helping me. never done this before. Everybody please be patient w me.

jay (smooth)

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

If they stay on the vine they will go from green to tan.

However, I wouldn't throw your seeds away, they may still be viable.

Belmont, NC(Zone 7b)

Gourd: Received your canna seeds. Thanks so much. Where did you get your envelopes?
The pods have not turned tan yet. Checked them yesterday. We are still in the 50-60's at night so I'm not worried about frost yet. I have seeds drying from green pods, when they are ready will send you those also. They are still sticky.
Dolores and Aknapp haven't forgotten you. Waiting for tan pods.
Horseshoe, thanks for so much help. Am new to seeds and pods.
Seedpicker: Hope I get gifts like yours from the birds. I'll have to be less ruthless when weeding!.

smooth, are you talking about the padded envelopes or the baggies? The baggies I ordered from VeriPack (1000 of the 2"x3"), but they sell them at Walmart in the sewing and craft section 100 for 99cents. The padded envelopes I ordered on ebay. 1000 for 11 or 12 dollars, can't remember now. But they always have them. I will see if I find the sites for you.

Don't worry about the seeds, I am in no hurry and I did get some.

Cassopolis, MI(Zone 5a)

smooth no problem I am not in any hurry!!!

gourd I would love the link for the padded envelopes, I will go search and see if I can find it.

Mesilla Park, NM

aknapp, I tried to find the ebay poster that sold these. This was 2 years ago that I purchased them, and I still have some of the envelopes.. they were size #000 bubble mailers 4"x8". I checked them out now on ebay and the prices are not even close to what I paid. Will check my credit card invoices to see what company it was. It was located in Florida, I think. They may have gone up too, but you would think that it would not be that much.

Cassopolis, MI(Zone 5a)

gourd do not be concerned, they probably have gone up that much.

I did some checking on ebay too, and they are cheaper their than to buy than other places. I just have to be sure the shipping doesn't make it more expensive. A couple of them wanted more for shipping that I thought they should have, but then I found a couple others that were more reasonable.
Thanks for looking!

Belmont, NC(Zone 7b)

Hi all:
Just want you all to know I am not ignoring you. The seeds I am drying (from the green pods) need a few more days of drying and they will be ready. Checked yesterday and the pods on the vines (at least 20 of them) are still just as green. Unfortunately we have Jeanne coming this aft.

Gourd: Am starting to feel awful guilty about all those canna seeds you sent me, so will send you a check for the postage (as soon as Jeanne lets me outta here) and then when my seeds from tan pods are ready will send you some.

Jay (smooth)

Mesilla Park, NM

Jay (smooth), you better not send me any check or any postage.. I have tons of canna seeds. I am just happy to share. Please do NOT feel guilty.. lol.. even if your pods do not dry, or they just plain rot, DO NOT WORRY. That is what sharing is all about. Antoinette

aknapp, I finally found the name of the company, god only knows how much i actually paid for that big box.. cuz i don't think they could of gone up that much. The name was printed right on the evelopes on the backside, lower bottom:

Thanks so much gourd!! I know they are more expensive now, but they are still cheaper than buying them 10 at a time.

Pod report:

Pods still green and the vines are turning yellow. We are down to 49 at night.
