i planted this seed in dec or january this year , i thought passion vines were suppose to take 2 years to bloom from seed? mine bloomed the first year.. it looks kinda alot like incense , but its a pinkish color, and the flower is about half the size... and later in the day the back petals will bend kinda backward...(: i love it! do passion vines grow the same as the pod parent? anyway here it is,...
Passion vine seedling bloomed!!!
Hi cici, your passiflora hybrid is very pretty. Some passiflora seeds grow true to the parent, especially when they are self-pollinating, such as P. morifolia, but some passiflora hybrids are sterile, and still some have to be pollinated by a different passiflora in order to bear fruit. In those cases, seeds will produce hybrids which will not be true to the parent but rather have the characteristics of the two parents. Your hybrid may produce seeds, but they will not be true to the parent.
Forgot to add that you are right that you are lucky to get flowers in the first year. Most passiflora seedlings bloom in the second year. Your flower does have a slight similarity to P. Incense, which is itself a hybrid between P. Cincinnata and P. Incarnata. Yours may also be a hybrid of P. Incarnata and something else.
That's a very nice flower:-)
I read that sometimes hybrid seedlings can bloom in the first year, and that it was the species that were mostly slower to bloom... I think it was here http://www.passionflow.co.uk/ somewhere.
thanx guys, for the info, this flower is only about the size of a a silver dollar, well actually a little bit of bigger them a silver dollar , but not much bigger.... i'l take a look at that link a little later tonight... gotta finish a bed i am building today...(: thanx again guys!
chrissy
cic,did you have anymore of those seeds?
Does it have a fragrance as well?
Very pretty!!!
I believe this is Incarnata, they will often bloom in the first year and really vary in color. I've seen the alba (white), pink, blue, almost purple and even a very very light lavendar. The leaves also show the Incarnata resemblance.

I see more than one pretty bloom in that picture!
