Pink Moth

Flower Mound, TX(Zone 7b)

I found this tiny pink moth on my caryopteris, and can't find the ID of it with a Google search...I have never seen one before, and want to know if it is common or rare and if it is a "friend" or "foe" in the garden!

... Wow ...
Have no idea at all, about it ...
But, my! .. isn't s/he a gorgeous shade of pink tho' ... !!!

Flower Mound, TX(Zone 7b)

Yes - and the photo is true to color, not touched up or enhanced at all. It is like a hot pink or fucshia.

Odd color for a delta wing jet fighter! Does San Francisco have an Air Force?

That is really, really neat looking. Great you got a shot of it!

I emailed Dale Clark of the Dallas Lepidopteris(?) Society about this one and he is going to look into it and get back to me. When he does I'll post it!

Will look for that!

Needville, TX(Zone 9a)

Go to this link to see the identification of the mystery pink moth. John Snyder of the Lepidopterists Society posted my photo under the "unknowns" catagory, and someone identified it. He asked to use the photo on his website; Moths of North America since they don't have a good photo of it. That's exciting :)

NW Qtr, AR(Zone 6a)

Sure glad Mr. Snyder finally got back to you about the pinkie!
And an even greater treat .. to have the pinkie ID'd !!!
And .. Wowsers! shearpamela .. Look at you! You're 'published' !!!!!

... You should feel soooo proud !! ...

I'll bet that now .. you and moonlighting both, feel most honored to have been
bestowed the privilege of the visits of the lil pink beauty .. the Pyrausta inornatalis !!
(I'm stickin' with using, 'Pinkie' myself - it doesn't get hung up on my eye teeth as easily!)
.. hee ..

And being able to document it .. via your photos .. is the icing on the cake!!

As my grandyunkins would say .. " tah-dah " .. and take your bows!! (Applause)

Thank ya'll ... for sharing your wonderful finds! .. magpye

Great detective work there! and a super photo too. There must be a sudden rush of these "little pink people", either that or we have one very busy moth!! I had one visit too yesterday, so its great to know what it is even if I can't pronounce it.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Gordonville, TX(Zone 7b)

Mags, its in my old dictionary too. Shoulda checked first, might have spelled it right. :-)

Needville, TX(Zone 9a)

Way to go Pam!!!!! Not only do we have the same moth but we also have the same first name!!!!!.....LOL.

Flower Mound, TX(Zone 7b)

What a coincidence! I loved your photo by the way...very clear, sharp and colorful :)

Needville, TX(Zone 9a)

Loved your picture too!

I would never even of imagined a hot pink moth. You two ladies took some very sharp pictures. Thank you for sharing them.

Finally a good picture of this little moth!! I have been trying to find out what it is for over a year. Aren't they beautiful?! They have huge green eyes too. Do you have red salvias also? I have wondered if they use these as a host plant. Ever since I bought the red salvia last year, and gave my parents some, we've both had these little guys. I started finding some little gray caterpillars on the salvia also. One got squished, and it's insides were pink. Just in case, I just let the little cats do their thing. It's not like I'm ever going to run out of that salvia!! Can we say FREELY self sows?!

Gordonville, TX(Zone 7b)

Which red salvia? I want some!

Burleson, TX(Zone 8a)

That's the million dollar question! I have no idea which one it is. I just realized too that I have never taken a picture of it. I'll do that tomorrow and see if anyone knows.

Needville, TX(Zone 9a)

They little cats are all over my "Coral Nymph" salvia - they destroy it. But I don't know if the cats turn into the pink moths, but yet I do see the pink moths all over the salvia....does this make sense???....lol.

Gordonville, TX(Zone 7b)

Got pics?

Needville, TX(Zone 9a)

Who me?

Gordonville, TX(Zone 7b)

Yes but, anyone with those gray cats.

Burleson, TX(Zone 8a)

Here is my red salvia. I never bothered looking for the little cats. There is always so much of it that they can't dent my supply.

i'm...do you raise butterfly cats? You seem very interested in these.

Not yet but, that day is coming for sure. I have searched the net for the how to do it sites. e.g., google raise butterflies. There are many sites that offer info and even kits w/cats. It doesn't appear time consuming either. I think it would be a great family project. Don't have one of those but, I am retired and get to be a kid again whenever I want! Another reason to look forward to spring!

I think I'll move this question over as a new thread in the Butterfly forum. Join in John! I have raised tons of Black Swallowtails and quite a few Monarch's inside. I've also raised a big batch of Ricini moths. It can be time consuming, but you don't have to do it with each cat you see.

lol...forgot what forum I was on...I mean I think I'll just start a new thread. :P
