Liner question

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

I'm in the middle of getting my yard straightened out
I built a new pond
Half in
half out
Its all padded now
I have a pool liner my BIL gave me and its been sitting out there....waiting
yesterday I told my husband to help me pick it up to get it inside the pond
Noticed HOLES
All 4 corners
Don't know if it was the dogs
peacocks
or rodents
But its ruined
I don't know how many more holes are farther inside

I have a friend who has a pool liner
Brand new,in the box
He wants 100 bucks for it

I shopped around for liners and the cheapest I found was 100 bucks on ebay but the shipping was 50 bucks

Anyone know of a inexpensive place to buy one?
Going to try places locally on Tuesday
just checking all my options

The pond is 16 X 11 and its 32 inches deep
Figure I need a 18 X 24 so probably 20 X 25 stock size

If the liner is the size of the hole you have use it as a pre liner, then line it with some rubber pool liner. Will work better then the orignal. TAR

I don't have a liner
I have a pool liner with holes
I'm chopping it up and using it for the stream bed

I'm trying to find someplace to buy a pond liner...CHEAP

I figure someone has to have gotten a deal somewhere

See if you can find roofing liner. You should be able to purchase it for around .35 a square foot. It comes in 10' and 20' widths and they'll cut off the lenth that you need. I'm not sure it the home improvement centers carry it. I get mine from a roofing supplier, that we are lucky to have here in town.

Branka, is roofing liner fish-safe?

Hobart, IN(Zone 5a)

Sylvi, that is a million dollar question and an individual decision. There has been a heated debate going on about that for years. The two sides fight very passionately about it, it's horrible. Roofing liner is commonly used and I have yet to see factual reports that the liner killed fish.

I have it in my koi pond (3 years old) and my indoor goldfish pond (5 years old) and the fish thrive happily will no ill effects. The one sold for roofing is a lot cheaper that the one sold for ponds and you should be able to find it locally. You will find the pond liner online for around .40, but you have to pay shipping. The stuff weighs a ton and I'm sure the shipping charges are astronomical.

I hope this helps.

That's very interesting. I always like to hear first hand accounts from someone who has actually done it that way. So your fish are fine. I am hoping to expand my pond, but the cost! How thick is roofing liner, did you use underliners, no problem with leaks, can it be spliced? Thanks!

Use old carpet for liner. Be sure to check it and cut out all the tacks. Check with a local carpet dealer that is replacing carpet in a home. Lots of it out there. As for the rubber roofing I have installed lots of it. It can be spliced but the glue is expensive. Buy it big enough to do the whole project with one piece.

Several schools of thought on this and I doubt there is a right or wrong, I sort of believe the differences in actual pond liner v. roofing liner come down to marketing as you are dealing with virtually an identical product. You can purchase .45 mil EPDM Firestone pond liner or you can purchase .45 Firestone roofing membrane. I once recall a web site that stated something to that effect and I saved what was written. Someone made this comment, "The liner is made with say 30 steps and then they pull off a batch and that is roofing liner while the rest continues on the line and gets some extra UV protection(pond liner). It has nothing to do with being fish safe but only how long it will last in the sun. Kind of like a Chevy and GMC truck. The Chevy has to pass 15 inspections while the GMC 21. Not that the Chevy wouldn't pass the 21 but the GMC must pass all 21. So IMO the issue is really about how long will the liner last (pond vs roof) not the fish health.". This made an incredible amount of sense to me. I purchased my firestone pond liner from AZPonds but next time around I will purchase the Firestone roofing membrane from a local roofing supplier. Once I rinse off the talc, I see no difference between the two products. Furthermore, roofs are exposed to the sun so they would have to be equally as UV resistant as pond liners.

It is my understanding there are issues with using actual swimming pool liners as there are chemical additives that inhibit/prohibit algae growth. This could affect fish health and would definitely affect amphibian health. Those types of hemicals are engineered to kill so you might want to consider re-evaluating whether or not you want to use the old swimming pool liner for a stream bed. Maybe somebody else knows more about this.

You might also want to consider using old foam carpet padding under a new liner. Sure is cheap enough and no staples to ever worry about.

AZPonds is where I bought my pond liner and felt underlayment but again, next time I am going to go with roofing liner and probaly foam carpet padding as an underlayment. Manufacturer's reps can tell me there is a difference in the two but then with all the successes so many people have had with roofing liner, I really don't buy it any longer and am going for most affordable. It seems practical to me but may not to you. I wish you luck with your decision as I really struggled until I read the analogy of the Chevy v. the GMC truck.
