I did not know that the gourds could be cured at different times. I always put mine on newspapers, and let them dry during the Winter months, and made many birdhouses from them.Some of them got a burled appearance upon curing, and I painted them with clear paint ,like Krylon.

Onalee those are the coolest! I notice that you are in same zone, but do you have the worst humidity in the world as well?

Yes, we have terrible humidity! It's hard to get the gourds to dry during the summer months, it is best to time planting them so they are ending in the late summer or fall when humidity (hopefully!!) is less, but I haven't had good luck curing over the winter. I've found the best time here in FLA to cure is from late summer thru fall, when rains stop but it's still hot.
