Welcome to DG. Could you count as an Alberta member who has temporarily lost her mind and moved to BC? Its getting lonely here being the only Albertan. The DG population on either side of me is growing like it was getting 20-20-20 every day. What am I doing wrong?
OldFlowerGirl
lololololol ..... poor Lynn!! Why don't you just accept you are a prairie girl.....in that you are in the majority! ;) p.s. if you move to BC, TAKE me!!
Welcome OldFlowerGirl......please send a hanky for Lynn to wipe up her tears!
Both of you must have a gardening friend you can persuade to subscribe. I did my part, have done at least two. Prairie girls are getting outnumbered for sure by Lotus Land ladies.
Ah but they were born and bred here!!
p.s. How do you think PanamonCreel feels....he is the only man that posts *on occasion* here!
OldFlowerGirl PanamonCreel is our only Canadian Uber (means he has posted lots of pictures in the Plant Data Base and gives really good advice). When it comes to posting here in the Canadian forum however he has to come out from hiding behind his bush! :) Sorry Milan.....I couldn't resist!! Trying to be better now. ;)
LOL, thanks Ladies for the jovial welcome! Lynn, I can't believe there are not more Albertans. No Calgarians even? Hard to believe, they usually love to brag! (Just kiddin" Calgary!) It's hard to bury those ole' Edmonton feelings. I still have family actually in Edmonton. My Mom and my Son still live there. My daughter lives her in BC, Summrland, so I see her a little more often.
I'll look forward to the posts from PanamonCreel!
D.
OldFlowerGirl. Just left the following message on "terra cotta pots", but thought you'd be more likely to see it here, so I'm repeating it.
Christine
Nice to meet you OldFlowerGirl. I'm a relative newbie to DG and (outdoor) gardening in general. I'm learning so much here, and trying to help where I can. See you around!!
Hi OldFlowerGirl, welcome. You'll like it here. And the others forgot to mention how brilliant PanamonCreel is on the Computer Forum. Has loads of knowledge.
He is going to kill us!! ;) He also tends to blush a lot too!!
See you soon.....I know I have a fridge that needs emptying and scrubbing and is calling me! :b
Well hello OldFlowerGirl and a big welcome to DG.
Now Ladies, will you stop making me blush? I told you before that this could cause a major naval disaster if my red head is being mistaken as an marker by a ship traveling on the St. Lawrence Waterway :)
Pam, here's a new one reading DG V2.0 :) (offspring from the other one)

Yikes! And you're a wildlife lover.
Ahem, how did you get that pic? Or do you live in a treehouse?
LOL....fancy meeting you here PanamonCreel!! I must admit we'd like to take a chance on that, but we don't want to have you arrested for interfering with Maritime traffic! You are soooo much fun to tease tho'!
Your squirrel whisperer ablilities contine to amaze me and it looks pretty promising with your new pupil.....so when are you bringing it out west??? I must admit I looked at it twice......it surely looks different than the other. Please don't make it too much smarter than me.....the KISS Method (Keep it Simple Stupid) will work just fine here! ;)

Welcome, also, Oldflowergirl.............I'm one of the rosenuts.....Elaine
Welcome again, OldFlowerGirl!
Lynn, count me as an Albertan - I lived in Edmonton longer than anywhere else, and still like it best! Oh, I miss the Old Strathcona farmer's market...mmmm, fresh pies....
My uncle lives in Edmonton, maybe I can convince him to sign up and then there'll be two bona fide Albertans (as opposed to ex-patriates :-)
Hey, how was the Fringe this year?
Shannon
Hi everyone,
Elaine, I am a bit of a "Rose Nut" myself! Nice to meet you. Hi Brugcrazy. I chatted with another gardener " Bruggie" today and after telling him I want to own a Brugmansia myself (as I never have had the pleasure), he told me I might be able to get one from "Liz". Do you sell plants or seeds aor can you recommend someone/someplace where I might get one? I ordered from McFaydens this year as I do every year, and they had nothing listed in their catalogue. Might have to go to a BC nursery for them, I guess. I have a catalogue coming in the Spring from a place called Sunshine Nurseries in Kelowna.
Yes, Lilypon, I do have waterlilies in my little pond. That was one of the things I was gonna ask you about. The ones that were in the pond when we moved a couple months ago (I think there are 3 of them), are very small (no flowers) one of them has red leaves. But I went to a waterlily sale right here in Castlegar a few weeks ago. A couple with a very extensive water garden set up (they had quite a number of ponds of varying sizes and depths) They were splitting some of their older plants and I bought a root from a speciman that she showed me in bloom, that is quite gorgeous. A Rosepink color. Anyway, I brought the root home and under her instructions, planted it in a 5 gallon pail with some humus type soil with chip rocks on top and slipped it into the pond. She told me I would have blooms this year? Now, I am not to admit that my pond water right now is not very..ahem...clear. I can't really see the top of the pail to see if it's growing or not. They stems that were coming from the root were about 6 inches long, but I didn't pull them out of the soil before sinking the pail in my pond. Should I have? Will they still manage to grow through and up to the surface. Hope so. It's hard to tell right now, 'cause theother water lilies are all floating around on top too. Any advice? I also have Hycinth (sp?) floating around on top too. Plus, some variegated reeds.
Shannon, you do get around, don't you. Saskatchewan and now I read you lived in Edmonton too. Now you are in Quebec. What's your favourite?
Donna
OldFlowerGirl, before I finish reading your post, Brugie is a she, and a very wonderful she. She has an amazing collection of plants and an amazing number of friends. She is one of the most respected people on Daves, on all the forums. And that's saying a lot. She's a very special person. You have good taste to have found her first.
Hi Donna
Well I think she made a mistake suggesting that type of soil to you.....they need clay for your pond to do well. I've used clay garden soil, clay pellets (for soil conditioning) and also a clay/sand mixture that we stole from outside a badgers hole.......he did all the digging for us. The soil she suggested could cause quite an algae bloom and could kill any fish that are in your pond (it happened to my Dad when he bought a water lily planted in the same type of soil). I think the chemicals, that were released when the humus in the soil was breaking down, killed them. Some people also use kitty litter without additives or perfumes (pure clay) to plant their water lilies in....I haven't but I've read it works.
The plant should be planted with the roots buried in the clay and the rhizome at a 45 degree angle. The growing tip should be clear of the soil and should also be treated very carefully. Any damage to it could kill the rhizome....especially if it is a small one without any side growth. The rhizome should also be planted with the dead end of the rhizome right up to the edge of the pot so that the growing tip will not hit the side of the pot. I also use the larger square aquatic pots that will give the rhizome more growing room. If the rhizome is small I've used the black pots that more established perennials come in. Repot yours quickly and keep it damp.
Pam

Oh my, sounds like I have done every thing wrong! Hi Liz, I will check your website as Jagonjune suggested. Actually Bruggie contacted me just to say welcome, in the Welcome Mat forum. She does sound very nice. (Can't imagine why I thought she was a he???)
Forgot to say Hi to PanamonCreel yesterday and thanks for the welcome. :)
LilyPon, I will repot my new waterlily as soon as I can and replace the soil with clay. Thanks for the info. Maybe I should redo the others while I'm at it, huh? Won't hurt doing it this time of the year, will it? You mentioned you didn't have a filter either, right. I have a fountain for aeration (sp?). I heard from a water gardener in MI that thinks that I should put a piece of styrofoam in the pond over winter with a some stiff tubing through it to enable the harmful gases to escape. She also warned me to never empy and scrub my cement pond, (which we have done) but instead do a partial water change, 50% being enough. (Sigh) sometimes I think I should just empty it and fill with dirt and plant some shrubs...sigh...
Don't give up!! ;) My Dad and I made a ton of mistakes......when we first got into them nobody knew anything in the local greenhouses. If your other plants and pond were doing fine, before you added the new one, they should be fine and you can repot them in the spring. The fountain is fine as long as it's water doesn't fall on the water lily leaves......they like H2O below but not on top, even long rains are not appreciated. People do put styrofoam to keep their ponds from freezing solid, in your zone you might also want to put a warmer (unless your winter temps aren't too bad). I have to bring all of mine in....here water freezes solid to 4 feet or more. People don't scrub the ponds so that the beneficial bacterial thrives. I've made all the mistakes you have...trial and error was part of the learning experience. Just this year we learned that out of 30 varieties of water lilies (between my Dad and I) only 3 do well in cooler summers. :(
Like any plant they have their likes and dislikes and gardening in water has it's own challenges but when they bloom it's worth it. Many writers have said nothing is as beautiful as a water lily in bloom.
;D
