Minimum space between brugs for inground planting ?

San Jose, CA(Zone 9a)

I am thinking about getting some of my brugs in the ground to get established before it gets cold.
What is the minimum distance apart that you think that I would be safe to plant them?
Would it be a different distance, if I am training them as alley trees or leaving them as bushes ?

Margie: I don't know what the general consensus is, but I planted mine 36" apart to give them plenty of branching room, and I remember at the time several people stating that was fine... Hope this helps :)

Gretchen...thanks so much. I was hoping that it wouldn't take too long for someone to answer my question. You were right there within minutes! (2 to be exact!) Now I can start planning my lay-out, then just get someone to dig!

I have mine at least that far apart and it is a jungle out there. I replant every year and yours should continue to get bigger and bigger. Mine will grow from 5-8 ft. tall in a season and can get 5 ft. wide, maybe a little more.

Sounds like I should make them a little further apart than 36" to be safe...glad to know before the holes are dug! Thank you Brugie !

Judging from mine that I have in the ground, I would plant them no closer that 5' unless you are going for a brug only garden. Not a great pic since I just ran out to take it, but tropical sunset went in the ground about a month ago from a 5 gal pot and look at her. She is in the blazing sun and does not seem to care. (Yes the bugs found her too. Poor baby. I am working on it.)

I try to plant mine at least 5' to 8 ' apart where possible ;some are closer. They get bigger every year and some get really huge unless you cut them as standards. I prefer mine as bush type.

Thank you all...looks like 5-8' would be the safest, unless I trim them as trees.
