After being severely abused by me and moved not once, but twice, my Crested EE seems to have forgiven me and is now going gangbusters! It was just a couple of little dried up blurbs when I got it.....what a plant!!
Xanthosoma jeoquinii lineatum
Wow, I may have to look for this one in the spring. Love the way the veins show up so well.
Thats a Jewel! Let me know if you find it Shirley.
This is one of my favorite ee's!!! They look great Happ! Wish I could leave mine in the ground year round!
Brugie and Root, I think I've got a couple extra babies I can put your names on if you'd like.
Jody...waving my hand wildly to be recognized...I could give them a wonderful home, too. I have never seen that Xanthosma...beautiful!
Wow! Happenstance they are beautiful.
What an awesome plant! Absolutely gorgeous! If anyone has any extras, please remember me. I collect the Aroids, and this would be a wonderful addition to my yard. Happenstance, thanks for sharing your photo. Very nice!
Jody, that would be wonderful. Thanks so much. We can talk about details and trades in an email.
That variety even likes Texas! Mine are doing good in part sun. Can they go in full sun?
Update...I've been informed that I may already have this one. I was thinking it was another one, and now I'm not so sure. If it is this one, oh happy day! I'm so excited I can hardly stand it because I collect the Aroids, and this is such a beauty. The one plant I want so bad is Philodendron 'McDowel'.
What a fabulous plant. If y'all have never seen a pic of it, I've attached one so you can see how cool it is. Very nice!
Jody, I got a box of plants last week and today I was looking at the tags and guess what......I have one already. Thanks for the offer, but I won't need it after all.
Lovely pics Happenstance. I just got one of these. I hope it survives my gh in the winter.
Gorgeous! I remember the first time I grew these and I thought something was wrong with them because they were cracking open! LOL
I think I can actually see this thing growing! Poor thing didn't look good at all a month ago, but now that I'm ignoring it is really taking hold.
Calalily - Mine is in full sun from about 10AM til sunset here in Northern California 10a.
Full Sun??!! Oh I NEED one LOL. I figured filtered sun or the leaves would get burned because we don't have the humidity. My Abbasynian banana got it's leaves burnt on the edges so I had to move it to only morning sun.
Beautiful Candy, thanks for sharing those shots, the the one with the sun coming thru the leaves.
>I think I can actually see this thing growing...Mine is in full sun...
Shoot...maybe that is why mine is growing so slowly.
Will have to do some shuffling to get it some more sun.
Thanks for the tip!
I moved two ears to the sun, we will see how they like full hot Texas sun, lol.
Calif_sue, I wish I'd known the Abby banana liked a bit of shade. Mine looks a bit faded in the hot sun but is too big to move now.
Sue, these are on the front rim of the pond as you saw it in May/June, so lots of sun. They did start off in a holding area until I redid that bed in front of the pond. My Red Abby is in filtered shade until late afternoon, almost impossible to get a good image of it but there is a recent one in this thread http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/453521/ . It's been in about a year and is holding up to the wind really well.
eje - If they can take the HOT sun here in the East Bay, I'm sure anywhere you are in the City would work well.
Cala - I'd give them an umbrella or a little relief from the sun for a few day....but even if the existing leaves crisp up a bit, it won't kill the plant.
Happenstance, we had perfect weather for transplanting this week. It is cool and cloudy with lots of gentle rain all week! They didn't even wilt. I did cut off all except one leaf per plant. Now to figure out how to give my banana some shade. Poor thing looks terrible.
DOes anyone know what is the lowest zone for this plant? I think I need one!
Our own PDB and other sites on the internet list it good to 7b, should be dug in lower zones than 7b
Susie
Plant some castor beans next to them for shade
Oh, that crested EE is just gorgeous! We don't have them in the nurseries around here. Maybe I can find them online? Jody, do they thrive in sun OR shade (filtered)?
Terrie
I moved mine from shade to sun and we got all those nice rains and they didn't even wilt!! They are loving the TX sun. I did work in acid fertilize(high pH here) and some gypsum and composted pine bark stuff and then mulced them real good.
Wow! Those look great. I'm going to go have a talk with mine and tell them they better grow fast!
Gosh, mine is just sitting there. Yours is gorgeous.
Oh, I have to have some of those crested EE! If anyone knows where to buy them on line, please let me know.
Terrie
