When the foliage dies back, and well before a freeze, dig them up and rinse them off. You can divide them at this point as well, if you wish. They can be stored in any absorbent media, or even layered on newspaper. Just make sure any excess water is off before storing them.
When we bring them in, around early spring, they are normally kept in vermiculite or perlite until they're sold.
Do you store them in a cool dark place? Would a basement work?

Dry yes, but not overly cool for most varieties. These are tropicals, so 75 or above is ideal. The cooler they get, the slower they wil be to wake up.
