Joseph's Coat, Dwarf Rose Joseph's Coat 'Rosea Nana' (Alternanthera ficoidea)
I would like to buy this plant. Can you let me know how to go about doing this? I really would appreciate hearing from you. Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!
Julie, Ihave had my plants for a couple of years now. It looks like at least 3 of the 4 I have in a large container are sprouting back out from the roots. I really like them because the foliage changes color throughout the year influenced by the temperature and maybe the amount of daylight. In spring and early summer, the leaves have a lot of pink. During the heat of the summer, the leaves gain some golds and in autumn, they have a lot of purples and maroon. Thanks for sharing the photo of this great plant which you don't hear too much about.
Bubbasissy, I bought mine several years ago as transplants at a local nursery, but they never had them again. I did see them one year at Home Depot or Walmart in about April or May. I have never tried to collect seeds or I would offer you some. I think that they would root from cuttings, but mine aren't up yet. I will get back back with you when they are up and I am able to take a cutting or 2.
Bubbasissy, I really don't know where you can get this plant in the US other than through trades here on DG.
Hazel, I agree, this is a great plant. Even in the middle of winter here it's lovely....albeit completely maroon. I'm looking forward to it getting some of it's pinks and greens back as that mottled look is what gives it most of it's charm :-)

If anyone has this plant and is willing to share I am giving my email just in case. I hat some of it years ago and when we had an unexpected cold snap I was in the hospital and it is gone. I love it and am willing to pay whatever it takes to get one small plant. Thanks for all your concern. homanchester@aol.com
You'll all just have to head over the ocean to Morocco. They grow two a penny here and are available in almost all nurseries for a little over a quarter! We rarely get the nice bright pink leaves here, but the dark bronzy-maroon foliage is still striking. It looks great with Santolina in mass plantings, or borders or rock gardens, or mocaiculture....... Just about anywhere! Wish I could send you some
Carey
careyjane, I'd love to be able to afford to travel to Morocco. :o) I bet it does look great with Santolina. They cost a little over a quarter ... wow, I think I paid about $2.49 for a four inch container size.
I'm so glad to know so many people are interested in this little plant. I found some at Lowe's two weeks ago and bought 9 of them. I then found out that the ones I bought were called Althenanthera "Purple Knight", It is a really nice plant but not the one I had so many years ago. I found out through talking to some of my husbands family that a cousin of my husbands had a lot of it and she lived only 16 miles from me. I now have several cuttings that are already rooted. Delores, if you are reading this I am willing to share. You know my email address. Thanks to all for your interest. Bubbasissy
I am happy you found cuttings of this plant. I had not forgotten that you wanted some cuttings. Mine have been very slow to come up because the weather has been so cool here for April and May. Luckily, all 4 are sprouting. They are still very tiny. I hope yours do well. :o)
I have what I think is Josephs' Coat, but the leaves are dark green with a maroon/purple edging around them. I live In Florida and it's November so maybe they'll change in the Winter or Spring--does anyone know if they change that much ? I'd like to get some cuttings from this plant so I can have it in another place; can I just cut some of this off and root it or do I have to dig it up and seperate the plant itself ? I'd appreciate any comments. I've always loved the name Joseph and that's my husband's name so it means that much more to me. Thanks in advance for any input anyone has. Gelene
The one that I have that is pictured here changes colors according to how much sun it receives and the time of year. In the spring, its leaves are mostly green as they are also if they are in the shade. This plant has very small leaves and does not grow very tall. The flowers are teensy. Its leaves do not have a consistent maroon/purple edging. They are more splotchy in color. Perhaps you have a different type of plant. I wouldn't dig it up and try to separate it. I would take some take some cuttings and see what happens. I hope that you are successful.:o)
htop....thanks. I'll try it and see what happens........Gelene :o)
You are quite welcome. :o)
