Mountains of Liriope

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

I have always been pretty cool toward this plant, but saw some beautiful dark green ones with dark purple flowering stalks at a fast food joint. All their beds are badly neglected and weedy because of lack of mulch. Since I knew them a little, I asked for some and she said she didn't care if I took them all!
Here's my question: are they a bulb? I dug up a clump and can't see any bulbs. Is it OK to dig and divide them now when they're blooming?

You can dig and divide them anytime. Hard to kill them. Probably cna't kill them if you wanted.

I had some dug ones that lived in an Ingles bag for 2 months before I got them planted. Just kept them well watered.

I like the variegated a bit better but have both, interspersed.

But, are they a bulb? I can't see any among this mass of roots. I guess I should offer to share some, but after mailing out 30 packages of yellow iris, and having about 10 packages of obedient plant to mail out, I'm taking a break.

Liriope is actually a member of the lily family. It spreads by stolons. (Think of what a daylily looks like and it's similar) It is not a bulb. If you dig some up and can't get it planted right away, simply stick the roots (stolons) in some water and they'll be good for a couple of weeks or more. They are extremely hardy plants.
