Installing Windows XP Service Pack 2

Midway, NC(Zone 7b)

Sparks and I worked for the same Company for several years. Our office was transferred to San Francisco and Sparks and family found other employment here. I moved back to Winston-Salem when I retired and we began corresponding by phone, and eventually by computer. (We were not quite able to do it by shouting although we lived only 6 1/2 miles apart.) Anyway, his favorite greeting when he called was, "Well, what have you fouled up today?", and usually with a good reason to ask. Since he is now so far away we do not call often, and he missed a wonderful chance to kid me last Friday after I had loaded SP 2 Wednesday night. The installation started out ok, but halfway through an error window announced that it Did Not Install. However, a SP 2 installation Wizard took over and eventually got it installed. It started very slowly that night, was still slow Thursday morning and froze on start up Friday morning. I finally gave up trying to get it going and contacted Microsoft, was given the new number for SP 2 installation calls, reached a Tech and he did what most of you would have done, he un-installed SP 2 via Control Panel>Add/Remove, which took almost an hour as it had to unload and then replace what had been removed in the Installation. With that out of the way we performed the simple little routine that I had forgot to do, shut down firewall/virus protection and Screen Saver. You know the rest of the story, the installation was good and my computer runs better than it has for several months. IE is running as fast as Firefox and I am not telling anyone what I failed to do, except maybe a friend or two in DG.
