My china dolls are about 25 to 30 feet tall. The winter was hard and need to know if I should trim them back alittle?? Rancho Cordova, Ca.

I've had mine for about 3 years and it survived a surprise snow with no problems. In fact it appears to be very hardy. I've never trimmed it back and mine is already 15 feet tall or more. It appears to be very hardy as I tend to ignore it and it has survived freezes, extreme heat, drought and flood and is doing beautifully and is now blooming! Mine loses all of its leaves in winter and puts on new ones in summer as it grows.
I'm on the Texas Gulf Coast so we get some pretty extreme weather and it's done great!

Humble, TX

I have a china doll that was 4" tall when I got it. Put in big and bigger pots and moved outside. It cracked my pot when it got 8'. I put it in the ground and it is 25' tall. This past winter it lost all the leaves in the freeze we had. Now sprouts are coming up all over the 2 main trunks. What do I do with it? The branches are bare. It bloomed last year for the first and the blooms smell wonderful. Do I cut it back?

I am no expert, but generally it is best to prune away dead wood. Cut back until you see live cambium/green wood. Then trim back a bit more for shape. Sounds like it will make it through. At 25', be careful. I just read an article in a small town paper asking for help for a man that cut down a 25' tree and does not remember much past the first crack - large hospital bill and he still is not back to normal.
