Doublefile Viburnum, Japanese Snowball Bush (Viburnum plicatum var. tomentosum)
Petts:
You have posted a picture of a very handsome viburnum in your yard. However, I don't think that image belongs with hobblebush, Viburnum alnifolium (now known as Viburnum lantanoides)
Your plant is more likely a very fine specimen of Viburnum plicatum var. tomentosum, the doublefile viburnum. With pairs of flowers marching along almost every branch illustrated, doublefile viburnum produces a prodigious display of color which then transforms to the fabulous fruit which your bird population obviously loves. It performs exactly that way here at my place in KY.
V. alnifolium/V. lantanoides, a much more northerly plant generally found only in the mountains in the south, has big heart-shaped leaves (see Copperbaron's picture); your plant has the typical elongated elliptical shaped leaves for V. p. var. t. If birds are eating your viburnum's fruit through the summer months, then you probably cannot have V. alnifolium/lantanoides because its fruits don't mature till the fall. Your doublefile viburnum fruit will also be attached by a very showy red pedicel (stems that the fruit are arranged upon); hobblebush doesn't have this showy feature when it matures its fruit.

Can this picture be moved to the doublefile file?
Thank you. The photo has been moved.
For future reference, it is best to use the 'Report and Error' button in the upper right hand corner of every plantfile page to report these errors. We don't always see the comments left on the photo threads. Sending us a report ensures that we will see the potential error and look into it.
Thanks. As you know, I'm happy to use the "report an error" link, but there are lots of times we've been told the best way is to post under the picture in question so the person who posted the picture can see it

Very true. And please continue to do so, but it's also helpful if you use the report an error button to alert us to the fact that you've posted to the photo thread. That way we can also watch the posts to see if a proper ID is established so we can move the photo. It also gives us a chance to research it.
Got it, that makes sense... thank you very much!
You're very welcome!
