We took Taffy my 13 year old cat to have his thyroid gland along with the tumor removed. He had his right thyroid gland removed. The Vet asked if we wanated to see the gland and my husband said ok. It was sort of weird looking. I had never seen one before and told the Vet it looked like a little fish. She said exactly, it reminded her of a tadpole with the swollen part being the tumor. It was a small tumor since we caught it very early. The whole thing including the tumor was probably less than an inch long and about as big around as a small goldfish.
I took digital pics of the stitched area on his neck but put them in a photo album since they are quite graphic. Anyone who has the interest to look be warned it is not a smooth clean area.
If you have an older cat it would be a good idea to have a full blood panel and a thyroid test done incase there is a problem, you will catch it early. Luckily the tests showed that besides the tumor he is normal. I am relieved he is not showing any signs of diabetes as I have lost two cats to that in the past.
Since the pictures are of a sore looking area I linked to them instead of having them in your face if you do not wish to look.
