any ideas?

Greenfield, IN(Zone 5b)

I am looking for ideas of perennials for an area that receives about 4 hours of direct sun in the late afternoon. They must tolerate deep shade in the AM, filtered shade early afternoon. Zone 5. I already have dicentra, hosta, Lancastrience Geranium, and 1 Astible (if it survives). This is a new bed I started this year, all the plants are young, and filled in with Impatiens, however I would like to find more perennials suitable to the site. Thank you,

How about some ferns. I also need ideas for my shade garden, but my ferns seem to be doing well.

I have aquilegia, aruncus, violas, tiarella, dicentra, kirengeshoma and ligularia. I also have astilbe but it looks bad cause I don't water it enough, same for rodgersia. I like to fill in with impatiens and begonias. I also use golden feverfew. It stays small and doesn't bloom but I like the contrast in color and shape.

Thanks Talinum, I've heard of most of those, but a few...I'll be checking the net to see what they are. LOL

Sweet Cicely, pulmaria, has pansies been mentioned.

Pleasantville, NY(Zone 6a)

Snapdragon, aquilegia, 'spring delight' phlox, Japanese anemone, chelone, knautia, 'Moonlight' coreopsis, monarda, baptisia, and see my Journal, for dozens more. My front bed is exactly that condition of sun and shade.

Helleborus or Lenten Rose is one of my favorites because It stays green all winter. Also Honesty or Money plant.

thanks everyone! Julie

No one mentioned lupines or cardinal lobelia (if you have decent moisture.) & hydrangeas would be happy in that lighting set-up. Some of the darker-colored daylilies (like Strutters Ball or Chicago Ruby) would thrive in that kind of light. & Primulas. Bleeding Hearts. Actually that's a nice light sequence for a shady bed; it should be lovely!

Try some Begonia and of course if you get 4 0r more hours of sun, Daylilies.
