TWO PLANTS IN ONE?

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

This was from one seed. There's another tree (it looks like anyways) growing here. Can this be used as a cutting or what should I do with it?

Karrie, I call those 'shoots', I don't know what they are really called. I let one grow to 71/2 feet, straight up, and finally Y'ed at the top, and I put it in a bucket, in dirts, in the shade, and it rooted last week or so and has a pretty, fluffy, new green crown!! I'm really tickled...

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

Can I give this away as a cutting then? If so, when would be a good time to do it?

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

Karrie, I'm too green to really know, but I had some limb damage and many broken limbs. I gathered all I could up, but apparently there was enough brug in the mulch, so now I have three new plants, growing on top of mulch. So, yes, I guess you could use it as a cutting. Since the plant is small, I'd let it keep growing and it looks like you will end up with lots of shoots and cuttings....

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I wouldn't give it away unless you have seen the seedling bloom. It could be something you want to grow out a while before giving it away, or it could be something that you won't even keep yourself. JMHO.......

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

Ya know, that plant (the big part) Y'd over two weeks ago. What I thought were buds ended up being more leaves. I've yet to see any buds.

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

That's a young or small plant Karrie, you might not see buds for a while, at least that has been the case with some of mine that size...

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

It's about 4 feet tall - it's in a very large pot.

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

Karrie, it's difficult to believe, but I had a cutting bloom that was only about 6 inches high, I had to put it on a pot to keep the bloom off the ground. But I do have a number of plants, about 4 feet tall that have not put on buds yet. I sincerely believe it's because they are not planted in the ground. Come hell or high water, I AM going to put them in the ground which has made all the others I put in the ground take off like wild fire!!

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

I wish I could put mine in the ground. But I'd be digging them up every fall, as I have cold winters up here in the Great White North (I live on the Eastern side of WA where it gets much colder than the other side of the state where Seattle sits).

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

Yes, Karrie, but you have lovely summers, which I crave; however, this summer is a delight...

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

Yes, we have nice summers here in Spokane - but they can get very hot and dry (near or over 100 at times). Right now we actually are having rain! I'm looking forward to more sunshine.

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

Karrie, since we are chatting, I'd like to ask a question. Is Spices a slow grower and what turns Spices on, fert, sun, shade, water,????? TIA!!!

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

If "Spices" is a Brug, you are asking the wrong person, because I grew my "first" from seed this year, lol! I'm a newbie! That would be a good question for Brugie, Monika, Rootdoctor, Kell, or one of those others that have been doing this awhile! Sorry!

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Species loves the sun. Treat her like the others with watering and fertilizing. I need to say that all of my brugs in pots are doing 100% better than the ones in the ground. Go figure. I think we all have to do what works best for us.

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

Is it "Spices" or "Species"? Anyone have a pic? I wanna see one in bloom!

Species.

That's a beauty RD, mine has never bloomed (maybe lack of sun). I'll try to keep it over winter and then next year put it in my sunniest spot (I have lots of large trees).

Karrie, if that is a seedling, what I've had happen before is that I start my seeds in a 'community' pot. When I pot my seedlings up, sometimes there is a un-germinated seed right next to the one that I'm potting and months later the second seed will germinate. Of course by this time the roots are too developed to divide them, so I have let the second one develop 'til it's large enough to cut off at the ground level and root it. I name it with the same cross as the seeds.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I believe if you can look closely at Karrie's first picture, you will see that this is a sucker or side shoot, whatever you want to call it. I call them side shoots unless they come from under the soil line and then they are basal shoots. As soon as it starts looking woody up the shoot a few inches, you can cut it off to root it or if you want, you can just snap it off and toss it since you don't know what your plant is going to give you in the way of blooms. I'm sure there will be plenty more of them later on. I agree Linda, what you describe has happened to me more than once. It is always nice to find another seedling though.

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

Brugie is right - I didn't use a community pot - I planted one seed a piece in separate cells. This has to be a sucker or side shoot.

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

Hey Root! If you ever feel like giving away a cutting of that spieces, think of me! Gorgeous!

Adrian, MI(Zone 5b)

Yes Rootdoctor, your Species, is beautiful!! I would love a piece of it when you trim it!!

Hey! I asked first! I've never had a cutting before! :-)

Karrie,
Here is also a picture of one of 'Species' daughters, 'Enchanted Double White'. If memory serves me still, 'Species' originally was markedet from Enchanted Gardens and 'Enchanted Double White' is a hybrid made by Enchanted garden. It resembles 'Species', but each individual flower can have all kind of different shapes.

That is very pretty too! I can't wait for mine to bloom! Even though 3 of my 5 have "Y'd", there aren't any pods. Maybe I'll have some blooms indoors, this winter?

I'm also going to need some advice for how I store these in the winter, and how much to water and feed them. (I am bringing them inside the house sometime in September).

Karrie, I also have questions re cutting back the brugs this fall. Should they be cut back as late as possible (right before frost) and brought inside to root, or should they be cut back earlier and rooted outside, or does it matter?? I know I'm going to find out for myself when the time comes, but I'd like to make as many plans as possible...

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

Hopefully one of our experts (or close to) will jump in here and answer our questions! :-)

Your plants are healthy, when these will bloom and what is their life now?

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

Gumlla,

Was that directed to me or to one of the other posters on this thread that posted pics? As for mine, mine are newbie seedlings (planted the seed in the house last February). Mine have "Y'd" but have as yet to create pods. They may not get to the blooming stage this year - but I am pretty sure they will bloom next year, if I take good care of them. They are about 4 feet tall, and I have to have my DH pick them up and move them for me (they are much too heavy). As they get bigger, he'll probably grab our oldest, strong DD to help move them. It will be a challenge this winter trying to figure out where to put them - and getting them there. I can't think of a single place on the main floor to put them, especially with Christmas - the tree takes up alot of space. So I have upstairs or the basement left. I've thought of putting two of them upstairs in the bathroom - they would get lots of light there, and it is a very large bathroom and hardly even used. The basement is very very dark and get's pretty cold in the winter. I'm not sure if they need dark or light during the winter months, so hopefully someone can help me with that. I don't have grow lights, and don't plan on buying any either at this point - they are SPENDY!

Mirpur (A.K), Pakistan(Zone 9b)

Flowerjunkie sent me one cutting of Brugmasia pink, as I am compltely new with this plant, but I am in love with Brugs, first time I saw pictures in a mag and then in DG , very attractive plant, if you have seedlings then you post pictures in first thread, what is that , is that seedling's pictures? One of my friend in USA also sent me seeds, only two of them are germinate. Hope next year my will also bloom.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I have better luck rooting cuttings when the weather is still warm. Bringing cuttings inside at frost time to root seems to take longer and many don't make it. Brugmansia plants/trees can live for many, many years. I've heard of some that are 20 years old.

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

Shirley, do you ever miss getting to see a favorite bloom in order to make sure you have a rooted cutting to winter inside??? It is looking like that is what I'm going to run into...

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

It happens Sherry, but don't give up yet. You have more warm weather to go than I do and I'm sure hoping that I'll see mine bloom before frost.

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

gumlla,

Mine are about 4 feet tall, and everyone in here still calls them seedlings. They've even Y'd, lol!

It's Brug talk that we've yet to experience, as we are new, and I am guessing we will know what they are talking about, as our plants progress.

My two Isabella X's have y'd now. Very excited about those two - they are my healthiest at this point - they managed to avoid the funguses and the spider mites that got to the rest of my Brugs and my gardens. They were in a very HOT sunny spot, up against concrete and stone, lol! go figure. Will take pics of them soon. (I think these two are going to be my winners).

Gautier, MS(Zone 8a)

Wow! Rootdoctor, That is one beautiful brug!

I want one! I want one!

Hey Root, check out the pic I posted in the annual forum for Loves Lives Bleeding. Wanna make a trade of some sort?

Thanks for the informations.

Guess what! My "shoot" is forming a Y now!
