Hummingbird Bee???

Greenville, SC(Zone 7a)

The other day when I was bringing my dog out, I noticed a bee inside one of my morning glory blooms, It didn't seem unusual of course 'Untill it came out' ... It had a small 'hummingbird beak'! I don't think I've ever seen anything like it! I tried to get a picture of it a couple times, But, Everytime it heard the cam go on, It would take off like a dart! ~ It looks just like a black and yellow bumblebee only it has that little beak on it, Has anyone ever seen one of these?? And if so, What is it?? I am going to keep trying to get a picture of it, Hopefully I'll eventually get one to post!

Shawnee, OK

I saw the same thing yesterday on one of my buddelia.
I'm not sure either...

I'm glad 'you' seen one too, I had a couple people ask if I was drinking that day when I told them about it! LOL!

This thread might help. I thought it was a tiny baby hummingbird when I first saw one... He was so cool...

groovytee, thanks so much for linking to that thread. The link to Moth of North American ws just amazing. Some of those moths are just stunning. To think, I lived 2/3 of my life in Oklahoma and had no idea there were moths nearly as gorgeous and FUN as hummingbirds! :-) This one I particularly like (check out bottom left photo :-): http://www.npwrc.usgs.gov/resource/distr/lepid/moths/ok/mor1066.htm

Oh Julie, I agree, they're spectacular! I've seen some pretty awesome moths around here. Unfortunatley, my digi cam does them no justice. I can't seem to get a good pic. Maybe I'll ask for a new one for Christmas, lol...

Groovyt, Thank's for the link's.
Still nothing match's what I saw though lol, I do see quite a few different hummingbird moths here ( Like the one pictured) And seen many different colored ones ( Even Black and yellow, Which was my favorite) But, What I seen that day, Looked Exactly like a BumbleBee, Only 2 differences were ~ 1, It had a small beak like a hummingbird, And 2, It was very 'skitsy' like one! Usually, I can get pic's of Bumbler's with no problem, They are pretty much only interested in getting there drink from the flowers, But this particular one knows when I'm watching him and won't stay around (But, I'm still determined to get a picture and hopefully, With a bit of Luck, I will! LOL! ) ~

Wow! I'd love to see what you saw IRIS. That sounds really neat. I've seen the ones like in your picture and they don't move like a hummingbird but more like a bee. Make sure you post if he ever decides to pose for you, LOL...

I surely will groovytee! I've seen quite a few odd creatures in the past years, but the bumbler/hummer has really caught my attention and I feel compelled to snab a pic of it!! LOL!

Iris, there is a such critter as a bee hummingbird. http://animaldiversity.ummz.umich.edu/site/accounts/information/Mellisuga_helenae.html I read about them a couple of weeks ago from a book I checked out at our library.

Here is another picture of it http://www.worldbirder.com/photonew/xpages/photo.asp?PhotoID=168 I was amazed how small this bird really is!

Who knows, maybe one was way far away home (they live in Cuba) cute little fellahs aren't they.
