Very first Brug blooms (ever)!

Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

I'm a newbie and only growing my brugs for my personal enjoyment, so be gentle! Here is a picture of my Ecuador Pink in bloom.

Terrie, the plants look very healthy but I am unsure by the photo that it is Ecuador Pink. I have attached a photo of EP. Will be emailing you.

wow - nice, healthy looking plant Trunnels! It sure is a thrill to see your first flush of blooms isn't it? This plant is very addictive -- this is my first year with them too and I just marvel everyday at the beauty of these babies in bloom!

Wow, Diane. I've seen your pictures and can't believe it is the first year for you! They are incredible! I'm already worrying about the winter. The one in the picture (plus two others) are planted in the ground. I'm hoping that if I cut them back and mulch over, they will come back. I also have some seedlings that I will probably bring in my house (I don't have a greenhouse) over the winter. Guess I can always root cuttings from the ones in the ground in case they don't come back.

There is a really good thread about rooting tall cuttings in water. Maybe someone will bring it back up.

Terrie -- your brug and entire yard are beautiful! Very nicely done :) Gretchen

Thank you, Gretchen. That's quite a compliment, coming from you!!

Bless your heart, Terrie!

Linda -- I found one of those threads on rooting large cuttings in water and bumped it.

Terrie, very nice job! She's really pretty and I know you're excited to see her bloom. I'm in love with all of them....LOL....you will be too!

Thanks, Shelly and Brinda. It is very exciting!

Barbara,
Thank you so much for the cuttings of Ecuador Pink! You are very generous and I really appreciate it! I have started rooting the cuttings in water. I hope that is the right thing to do.

I have to agree with Barb, I think you have a nice peach colored versicolor there instead of Ecuador pink, not sure which one, but don't think it is EP.

Lewisburg, KY(Zone 6a)

This is my first summer too. I think this is Pink Frosty from Nat.

My daughters bought two little Verbena plants for Mother's Day plus other items. That stuff just went wild! The daylilies are invisible now. I will have to pot this up and bring it in. :(

I am so hooked. I am envious of you Terrie in Texas.

Mary,
I actually bought the cutting from Barb on Ebay. I was not concerned in the least about which brug it was but she sent three new cuttings from her EP last week. A very nice person.

Bluegrass, guess we all wish we were where we are not! LOL I think your area is gorgeous. Do you have a little land there or are you stuck on a suburban neighborhood lot like me?

Lewisburg, KY(Zone 6a)

We own 5 acres here and I help with my Dad's farm. About 160 acres.

Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

Now I am REALLY envious!

Terrie, sorry about the mix-up. Just a note to tell you that I use medium perlite to root cuttings and keep the perlite just damp. I dip them in rooting hormone and then put them in the perlite. The perlite doesn't have any bacteria or fungus like soil and I do hundreds of cuttings and find that the loss rate is much less than any other method I have tried.I keep the cuttings in the perlite until I see roots pushing through bottom of container. If you use water, once the white nubs appear on the surface place it in the growing medium/soil you are going to use. Also, make sure you change the water every few days until the nubs appear. Good luck.

Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

Thanks so much Barbara. I have been changing the water and there are now white nubs. I was waiting for roots before planting so glad I saw your post - I'll put them in soil this evening!

hi Terrie beautiful yard i see you take pride in gardening nice brug i do not think that is ep. i know how confusing especially with pinks keep up the good work Bob ps i know you will get addicted to them i up to 70 now and have to bvring in and put them down cellar.

Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

Thank you for the compliment, Drummat! Gardening is definitely my passion. You are right about the brug not being EP. BWard caught it, too, from this picture and sent new cuttings from an EP! The nicest people are DGs!

You are doing great. My first year I only had two or three blooms total because I didn't realize the spider mites were killing my brug. Keep up the good work.

Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

Thank you, Shirley. I'm on my third flush of buds! Just hoping this heat doesn't make them drop off before they bloom. I would still like to get a tree full of blooms one of these days!

Trunnels beautiful brugs there. Don't ask me what kind cause I am like you I grow them for the enjoyment and have gotten hooked this year. The brug crew is so good about helping identify and giving pointers about growing. I felt like a fool when I posted pics of my first earlier and called it Pumpkin Gold cause the nursery had it tagged like that. Evidently there is no such brug and Root Doctor was kind enough to tell me it was Dr. Seuss which overjoyed me cause I'd heard such good things about it. Anyway keep up whatever you are doing cause they look really healthy and have tons of blooms. Jenny

Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

Thanks, Jenny! I think I saw that thread. I really appreciate the knowledge of all the brug experts on DG. How is your Dr. Seuss doing?
Terrie

Woodville, TX(Zone 8a)

Terrie, my Dr. Seuss is thriving. It has tons of buds and has several blooms everyday. It is about 7 feet tall. Just thrills me to walk under it. My other 6 brugs are not as big. I do have a Versicolor that I bought in Fredricksburg but it hasn't bloomed and has y'd and y'd again. Must not like it here in E. TX. The others are all fairly small (were cuttings I traded for) but one (lt pink) has begun to bloom and I think it is only a matter of time before the white does the same. Thrilling! How many brugs do you have? How did you get started? (I wandered into the brug forum and was hooked when I saw the pics) Jenny

Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

Well, the exact same thing happened to me. I didn't even know what a brug was until I joined DG. I couldn't resist the name of the forum "Brugmansia and Friends" so I checked it out. The rest is history. I have three brugs in the ground that came from cuttings I bought off of Ebay. It turns out, the seller is also a member of DG, very nice person named Barbara Ward. I also received 10 seeds (unknown name) from the person who was supposed to be humblejumble's father (if you are familiar with that mess). So, I had ten seedlings potted up but I've given four of them away. I'll bring the others in for the winter. I also have three new cuttings started from BWard. I hope to have lots of blooms next year! Where in east Texas is Woodville? My grandparents and mother are from east Texas; my mom was born in Canton. We still have a place on Athens Fish and Game Lake.

Terrie if you know where Beaumont and Lufkin are I live right between the two cities. I have attended the Canton Trade Days tons of times (gotten so commercial the last few years) and so I know a little about that area. We are further south. I guess you'd call it southeast TX. What city is your grandmother from?
I am going to try to get some seeds this year and have them ready to plant come spring. Isn't it great to find a new plant to delve into? I really love hydrangeas and have quite a few of them, but brugs are such a challenge. We didn't even go on vacation this year partly due to my brugs. You know they need water everyday and I couldn't trust it to anyone. Ha Ha Jenny

Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

Jenny, I know what you mean about being afraid to leave the watering to someone else. Fortunately, I have three girls that I can usually coax into taking up the hose while I am gone (with a little incentive, of course). My grandmother was also born in Canton. I haven't seen any pods on my brugs so guess I won't get any seeds this year.
